Black paint is definitely the best. My 80 year old Leica has a lovely patina and is beautifully distressed. The smell is the best though!
In the end though, it is how it works and what you do with it that counts. Still rather have black though!

I think you're wrong. Chrome is the best. What does an 80 year old Leica smell like? I hope not like my grandmother.

I have seen some lovely shiny chrome bodies but when they begin to show their age I think that black somehow has more 'character'. I like to see the brass bits shining through.
There is a leather smell from the ERC but I use it free of this and it retains an unmistakable odour. Hard to describe.

if I can smell my cameras, that is not a good thing (unless they just got new leather covers, of course).

this one has metallic smell... but, it's not a Leica...

and, I don't think there was any choice among silver chrome, black chrome or black paint. it was only $12 on eBay. I keep it well away from my Leicas in case whatever it suffers from happens to be contagious.;)

When I bought my M8, I opted for the Panda version because I liked the paint finish better than either the black or silver chrome AND because Kurland was "kind" enough to charge the same for each version (I actually think they were happy to sell anything they could at the time I bought mine). I don't think I'd have spent much more than a $100 differential for this camera in bp vs black chrome. but this is destined to never be a collectors' item so far as I can tell.
