All things being even; like Johnny Cash and the T-Model Ford. Comes after function and price generally though.

Chrome and black lens. Canon.

The Panda look is attractive in general.

Most of my bodies and lenses are chrome. I love the classic look of these combos. Nevertheless, I'm sure I'm going to like the black 35 summicron v4 once it arrives, especially with the nice black M5 lenscap it comes with :)

Well my friends, sorry if you find this poll nonsense, but the main goal was to know how many of you would actually response with the option: "You don't really care?"

But I personally find interesting the outcome of the current results of this poll.

I think that silver lenses on black bodies look kinda odd!

So I selected the other three options.

Yes, its a nonsense poll .... but, so what :D

HCB didn't seem to have a problem shooting chrome lens on a black body.

Don't give a damn so long as the combination works.

Agreed. Most folks can't really tell what gear you took the pictures with let alone whether it was chrome on black or otherwise.

Cheers,

Does it make a difference out in the sun all day? Does the black heat up alot more? Just curious...

Difficult to answer. Especially since it very much depends on the shape of the lens as well; I think a svelte chrome collapsible 50 looks splendid on a black camera, while a chrome 90 on same camera looks absolutely out of place..

Dude, black bessa L with silver 12mm and matching viewfinder, most awesome.

Al Kaplan
11-28-2008, 23:37
I had a black Bessa L with black 15mm lens and finder. The body died and I picked up a chrome body. What the hell, who'd get a $59.95 body fixed? The black lens still takes photos on the chrome body. My other lenses are an assortment of black and chrome, the M bodies chrome, the CL black. Sheeeesh! Next somebody will be asking where they can get their Visoflex chromed. Make sure you wear black jeans when shooting with a black body, faded blue or beige jeans with a chrome body, and the leather neckstrap should match your belt and shoes. Even if your pix are fuzzy you'll be lookin' sharp!

I'm not that fussed and it wouldn't bother me if I ended up with a black barrelled lens on a chrome/silver body.

That said if I had the choice I would want the lens barrel's colour to match the camera body's dominant colour.

It's not because I'm a collector, obsessive compulsive or anything like that, it's just my eye has an eye for aesthetically pleasing things and that perhaps is why I love my photography in the first place! :)

Don't really feel strongly about it, but if pushed I suppose I prefer it if the collars and cuffs match....

Nope.

I do draw the line at using my white camera straps after Labor Day. :D

Black. Whenever possible black.
However, until the government provides a Bailout Package to the Chrome Nikon Rangefinder Body Users, I'll be stuck with what I could afford.

I like the chrome on chrome as a classical Leica look that cannot be replaced by any other combination. I use any combination though. Give me pink lens on orange camera and I will use it if the lens is good.

black lens on chrome body is sexy, chrome lens on black body just doesn't work.

I beg to differ . As I was putting my chrome CV21 on my M2, I put the chrome ZM 35 on the black Bessa R3A and noticed that it had a lot of panache.

Al,
If I could find a pink camera for Dana and a purple one for Lina, I would make them very happy.

Whatzisname Shintaro could paint the metal, Cameraleather could re cover the body, Luigi could make matching cases, and you'd be BROKE!

I'll kick in $10 towards the project. Anybody else?

black and black for use where getting noticed or robbed is not your aim. Chrome on chrome is beautiful but not wise in some parts of the world, esp with modern leicas which DO look expensive rather than 'vintage' - must be the clean lines of the modern MP vs the M3 etc. Well, thats what random Afghans have told me anyway - 'oooh, thats an expensive camera.' Not what I wanted to hear.

Generally, when buying second-hand I've not had much choice. However, for once having the money to pay for a top-notch repair and refinishing job (thank you, Peter at CRR Luton) I've got – and voted for – just the combination I wanted…

I have 2 lenses black and chrome. And two bodies black and chrome. So, I don't care much about the looks but more what film is loaded where and what focal length I need. At the beginning, I bought a silver lens for the silver camera and a black lens for the black one.

P.S. Nothing beats black+black for a stealthy street shooting! For family pics and collectors silver looks much more attractive.

Al Kaplan
09-13-2009, 11:02
I like to use those yellow and black Nikon neckstraps on my Leicas. Real stealthy, huh? But they're soft and limp and easy to wrap around my wrist and they didn't cost me anything.

I have never ever had anybody ask why I had one silver body with a black lens while the other sports a chrome lens. I've never asked Leitz/Leica why they only made certain lenses in black, others only in chrome, and then! OMG, they don't all have the same knurlings.

Stealth is more a matter of how you carry yourself than camera color.

There are better ways to make a fashion statement.

I started with an M6 Panda and so far, have only bought black lenses. I have come to like that combination. My next film body will be black, probably an MP. I'm not sure what color I'd like an M9 in but if I do manage to actually afford one, I'd take either but faced with a choice, I'd probably choose black. Some day I'd like to have an M3 with matching lens. I think they all look good.

I agree that a lot of your being noticed has to do with how you carry yourself.

Just tell them that it's an old fashioned film camera, no meter, and is always going in the shop for adjustments.

Black is VERY expensive here in Japan. A friend of mine spotted a black rigid Summicron the other day (for the M3) and it was around $3000.
That's an extreme example, but chrome is cheaper.

aside from matching chrome/chrome and black/black, a black camera with a silver or nickel lens can look nice if the lens is small.

there are also some lenses that are both chrome and black, like the 50mm sonnar and heliar in nikon s-mount. those look good on any color body.

Chrome Leica manual cameras lens does not matter, black Leica metered camera but black lenses only. I put my Summarit with the camera quest generic hood (41) in my RD1 and looks awful to my eyes but nevertheless have great results.
