Too lazy to start a poll, but have always wondered:

who says "RETina"( the opthomological pronunciation) and who says "reTEENa"?

Eh?

In Greece is is 'Retsina', and comes from a bottle.

It's Retina.

auch in Deutschland, where they were made? Purist came in one day & ranted about 'Retina', and I regrettably pumped it up by saying that Nikon should then be pronounced "Nee-kon.";)

Well I say Nee'kon and pronounce it "Rettina" Retina and I live in Austria but Reteena is also common.....Let's pronounce it in different ways at the grave of Dr. Nagel and see how often he turned around....

One man's ceiling is another man's floor.
Or one man's floor is another man's wall when it comes up to greet him.

That said, I don't drink the Greek stuff and I say REH-tee-nah. Coincidence? I think not! :)

I use the German pronunciation "reTEENa."

YES! Or rather it is my humble self mirrored in one. The poor man's fisheye, but don't tell the model or she'll tear my head right off.

Wait, that's the German pronunciation? I thought my German was fairly good, but on these matters obviously the experts disagree every now and then.

We've been down this street once before, if I recall correctly... but this thread is much more fun than the last one!

I say "Koe- dack ret-een-ah" and everyone (here in US, at least) knows what I'm talking about... except those who say "what's that?"

What's a Coe duck?

Similar to a goo-ey duck (geoduck, as in clam)?

I was corrected last year by a long time Retina collector and repairman, "its Reteena", he said as he gave me a look over. I had just inherited my IIC and it hadn't been used since 1970. I brought the camera to him for a CLA quote. Reteena sounds better than Rehtina anyway, I vote RetEEna!

Well, I know it's supposed to be ReTEENa but I find myself using the other pronunciation frequently.

Well, there ya go.

Now did you pronounce your request for a "clean-lube-adjust" estimate "clay", or "clah"? :D

Seriously, I only posted the query after recalling my own encounter with a "TEEN-a" adherent to try and see how deep the difference between usage of the US vs. German pronunciations runs.

Personally, I just say "IIa" or "IIIc"... Yeah, re-TEEN-a sounds better to me, too, but I ain't throwin' any rotten toMAHtoes at REHT-ina speakers...

I use the Romance language pronunciation, which makes it intelligible outside the United States.

I don't use enough retsina.

Whe in doubt AND the US, like Paul Simon. The Simonized Version: "I gotta Nigh-Con cam'ra; I love to take fo-o-o-to-grafs...." etc.

Elsewhere, who knows?

BTW, heard about the 25 f/1.0 M-mount? "Sumo-Cron".

I'm in the reht-nuh camp. It honestly never occured to me that it would be pronounced any different than the bit of the eyeball, and that's how my strange hybrid accent renders the eyeball bit.

"I'm in the reht-nuh camp..."
which brings up the question is an avid collector a "reht-nut" or a "retinite"?
