View Full Version : Shoot all day on Summer Solstice

RML
04-10-2007, 22:19
The "shoot all day on equinox" 24-H shoot-out was good test for many.
Lots of people jumped in and found out it isn't as easy as previously thought to stick to a plan, shoot on "command" and come up with shots they are happy with.

So, let's assume the "shoot all day on equinox" was an audition. Let's also assume you aren't put off by your performance and let's assume you want another chance.

Here is that chance!

Come and join me in the "Shoot all day on Summer Solstice" 24-h shoot-out!

Same rules as with the equinox shoot-out.

The date is the same for everyone: June 21, 2007.

----- IMPORTANT -----
Just for the record:

WHAT: a "Shoot all day" event

WHEN: Thursday, June 21, 2007, a.k.a. Summer (or Winter depending where you are) Solstice

WHERE: anywhere on this planet

WHO: anyone who is able and willing to spend some time (the more the better) on June 21, 2007, to shoot pictures for this worldwide event

WHAT CAMERA / SUBJECTS / TECHNIQUE: this is all up to you. Anything goes (well I mean, as long as it is legal, it will be alright ;-)

HOW and/or WHAT to shoot: doesn't matter, but analog shooters please keep in mind to keep a record of the exact time(s) of your shot(s).

WHAT DO I DO NOW: just post to this thread, telling us "you're in" - or something like that

WHAT DO I DO AFTER THAT: just wait for the day to come (6/21, 2007) then shoot as many pictures as you can that day, and submit your best ones (you'll be your own judge here). In the meantime, watch this thread from time to time, to learn about the details and/or to participate in the preparations phase

HOW MANY PICTURES PER SUBSCRIBER?
24 or less

WHAT SIZE / QUALITY?
Good enough for a 30x40cm / 12x16'' quality print

WHY: to be shown in galleries in as many places as possible, to be published in a photo book, to be part of a worldwide event and to benefit charity (on which we will decide later on, in a poll)

HOW DO I SEND MY PICTURES IN?
Digitally. JPEG will do. TIFF wil do. Try to keep the quality up to gallery standards, so please use as little compression as possible. Details will follow!

SO I WON'T NEED TO SEND IN PRINT(S)?
No.

IS THERE A DEADLINE?

10 weeks only? Yes, time flies when you're having fun. Spring doesn't last forever. Summer will be there before you know it. And then... bummer. Autumn and Winter again. ):

Anyway, keep your diary updated. After the Summer Solstice shoot-out you may see an Autumn equinox and Winter Solstice shoot-out come up. :p

I'm not deterred by the equinox ... I must learn from mistakes ... this time I'll be more prepared  ... but this time may be even worse if I'll have poorer results because I won't have any "lack of preparation" excuse  ...

At least you get a tax return! :D

I weighed my 'current' field camera. It's the one I restored. Capable of 5x7, but I use a 4x5 back on it. The camera + lens weighs 4.7kg - over 10lb's!!! That's the same weight as the heft solid wood tripod I sit it on. So together I'm lifting nearly 10kg every time I want to have a play with the camera

BJ, Danny, Eric... you're all in.

To all, really try to prepare for this event BEFORE the event! Many participants of the Equinox project found out the "hard" way it's difficult to just try to wing a thing like this. And this Summer Solstice project is really a rebound for most of us. :) If you're new to this project, see how we did last time and try to do better than us. :p

I'm about 90% certain that I won't be working that week, so I think I can join in. The trick is that it will also the last day of the RFF Canada meet in Montreal, so I'm going to be pretty bagged, and the Mrs. might want to see me, too! ;)

I never thought about planning for an event like this. What type of planning is necessary? A list of checkpoints to stop for food, drink, etc at certain hours. Something more rigid that lines you up with 24 different tasks for the 24 different hours? Any advice will be appreciated.

"Lots of people jumped in and found out it isn't as easy as previously thought to stick to a plan, shoot on "command" and come up with shots they are happy with."

Have everyone limit themselves to one roll of film for the whole day and watch how with more careful consideration knowing you do not have unlimited film the quality of the images go up!

It's a neat idea but the Equinox and Solstice shootouts are free of limitations. People can set their own limitations in any way they want. All these projects aim to achieve is give people a reason, some motivation to go out and shoot, deliberately.

I'll keep it in mind, though, for another project when shooting is slow. :)

hi,

if this is a global project and you need to record the exact time, don't you need to have the precise location as well ?

Don't forget to set your wristwatch and camera clock to the correct time for this Solstice shoot. This saves time afterwards calculating all the correct times for the photos ;)

I have been looking for a nice photo log PDF but haven't found it - anyone ?

24 hours of Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/groups/24flickr/) seems a similar exercise.

Daylight Savings Time started quite some time ago, so I reckon everyone has his watch set correctly. :)

Don't bother to find when it's really Summer Solstice. It doesn't matter for the project. I've set June 21 as the date for the project. And yes, Summer Solstice spans from June 20 until June 22, depending on where on Earth you are and compared to whose time. :)

venchka
06-18-2007, 12:50
June 20-22 is work time. I may shoot a bit but certainly not all day.

My "Solstice" will have to be June 22-23-24. I should be at home in the woods. Much better subject matter there.

Yes. As for now, September 1st. If this changes, it will be to a later date, not sooner.

I'll be working too tomorrow. But I can shoot a little on my way to and fro' work, in my break, and after work. I'll be going to a play at my daughter's school. That might give some nice opportunities. And the weather is going to be fine IIRC, so I'll be cycling to work. More opps. :)

We got weather forecast of pouring rain all day long. I fancied taking some LF shots, but no joy I don't think. :(

What happened on the solstice? 52 signed up to shoot, but so far not much chatter here.

I had a bad day with my multiple sclerosis, and could not get up that day. Any photo that day would have been my wardrobe doors, in various lighting.

Now the MS has gone again, and I have my camera in a pocket today. But it is not summer solstice.

Jon that's terrible, here's hoping days like that are few and far between.

Well, for me it wasn't much of a good day either. Heavy rains killed most of the joy, and work killed quite a bit of the rest of the day. I did shoot, however, and hope to post a few photos in a few days.

Not a great day for me either. Only managed a few shots around where I live. The attached image about sums it up :) I'll post a few more in the next day or so.

Taken with M8 and 35mm UC Hexanon.

With the heavy rains here in Holland and some hectic developments at my work place, I had just a few hours to shoot, I barely got 1 film filled. I hope to have them online soon.

Cheers,

In between 2 jobs I was able to finish 2 rolls that had sat in the cameras too long; so I consider it a moderate success at any rate. Taking the film to the camera shop tomorrow & maybe I'll get to pick up the results this weekend.

I managed to shoot a couple rolls over a few hours in the AM, lunch, and afternoon.

I still need to process, but I am hopeful. I *saw* some good moments. Now we see if I captured them. :D

I actually had a reasonable day. Took the day off work and went down to Brighton on the south coast. Weather co-operated nicely (despite flooding in the rest of the country). I haven't posted my photos until now as I've been busy at work since then...

My favourite from the outing:

The others I liked are:

Click on any of the above images to see larger (1000 pixels wide) versions. They are all in one album on flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/ballfresno/sets/72157600455069674/).

These were all taken with my Minolta dSLR and a 28mm f/2.8 mono-focal lens, captured in RAW and post-processed using the Gimp with ufraw.

George, love the tattoo; cannot see the other photo (the implication is that there is more than one in your post?).

Steamer: love the colours in the second photo. Great eye for detail.

Gid: what can I say? "does my bum look big in this?" ;-)

Eric Thanks
Nice shots of Brighton, I especially like the station shot, the repetition of the ceiling girders, overhead cables and blue posts works well.

Dear Eric, great shots! They remind my happy summer holidays in Hastings many years ago; I visited Brighton-Rye-Canterbury-Eastburne-Leeds Castle, and I still keep very good memories!
I would like to go back there soon: I lived with an host family on the Castle Hill.
and they made me discover the English pubs...

What do you mean "next year"?! Isn't there an Autumn Equinox? :p

I like the shot of the graveyard and the shot in the train.

Dear friends, here you can see the pictures I took on June 21.
Two of them show the rehearsal for the band (I play flute/piccolo) + choir concert to celebrate the 100th anniversary of our parish church; the third picture shows the Parish church.
They were taken between 9.30 and 11.30 PM, with a Zeiss Ikon Contaflex Super loaded with a Fuji 800 ASA.
Any comment will be welcome indeed.
