View Full Version : Which CV Lenses Do You Currently own

I've made the statement many times that the CV 35/2.5 is the most popular lens here on RFF. I've no proof, but out of curiosity let us know which CV lenses you CURRENTLY own.

Note: Because of space limitations I had to gang everything below 28 into one choice and I had to not include the 50/3.5. :(

One of the reasons that the 35f2.5 may well be the most popupar lens, besides it being really good for a reasonable price, is the fact that the Leica 35mm offerings are so expensive.

I currently own a 35/1.7 and the 75. The other half bought himself the 50/1.5 for christmas... so I has use of that as well. Am looking at getting a wider angle - either the 21 or the 25 - would love some feedback on either of those lenses.

I interpret the early results to show/confirm what has been said often here, the 75mm focal length is very useful on a RF, and the CV 75 is an excellent bargain lens.

Hey! That's my kit. I have a 90 Elmarit built-in hood as well. It may go onto the block though after I handled a Nikon S3 2000. If you use 50's a lot, the Nikon finders are heaven. A Nikon with a 50 Nokton would be great.

I can't. I want to select the 15 and the 25 but they are under a single tick box.

I know a poll can only have 10 boxes and that CV has a ton of great lenses but if the point is to find the most popular CV lens it doesn't work well to just throw a whole bunch of lenses under the same single tick box.

OK, the coffee is starting to kick in.

I find it no surprise that the CV wides are so popular, yes there are other choices, but really, they have no competition. A very brilliant product line.

Ray's belief is that the CV 35/2.5 lens are most popular. I am not surprised to see that they are so voted for, along with the 40 and 50 Noktons.

I think it would be interesting to see which wide is most popular. We do have to work within the limits of the forum I guess.

Funny that,
I don't know why, but I had assumed that the 40 would have been the most popular, and that the 50/1.5 (of which I have one) would have been quite rare.

I started with the 35 Ultron 1.7 which came from a member here, since then i have added a 40/1.4 MC, 50/1.5, 35/2.5 and finaly a 28/3.5. Of all of them the 40 Nokton is a favourite it lives on my R2, the 35 skopar, 50 Nokton and 28 skopar will make up my travelling kit but it will be hard to leave the 40 at home.

I found that pretty interesting, too. Maybe as much as the stand the wides are making! Hard to break those out, without another poll (I'll leave that to someone else...hint, hint), but, based on the comments, the 25/4 is very a popular lens.

I have the 15/4.5, 35/1.7 and 75/2.5.

The Ultron 35/1.7 is my favorite. It's on my R2 by default. I use it about 99% of the time. The 15 sees more use than the 75, mostly because I have a back focus problem that makes the 75 risky to use. Will fix that sometime.

12/5.6 (Like it and use it very much, either on the M3 or the R-D1s)
28/1.9 (Love/hate relationship)
35/2.5 (Lovely lens but now sandwiched between the 35/1.2 and the Summaron 35/3.5, maybe will sell it)
35/1.2 (Keep getting stunned by image quality on the R-D1s)
50/1.5 (This image quality should be forbidden for this price)

Ordered a Summicron 28/2 ASPH, probably selling the 28/1.9 (or keep it on the M3 for street shooting).
Had the 28/3.5 for a week, sent it back, bad match with the R-D1s, AFAIC.

which is better? This IS a difficult question because the angles of view are quite different, and the best method of choosing is on that basis. But from what's said on the Cameraquest website, it seems the 12mm has slightly better build and optics, and a nicer viewfinder.

What I have so far...

15/4.5 Heliar. It was my first CV lens and came "free" with my used R2.
21/4 Skopar. Learning to use it but love it so far. Will post a review on my CV Fansite (http://www.cosina-voigtlander.com/) as soon as I can put the images together.
25/4 Skopar. Permanently attached to a Bessa L. Awesome combo.
28/1.9 Ultron. My current favorite lens. I wrote a review about it HERE (http://www.cosina-voigtlander.com/content/view/33/28/).
35/1.7 Ultron. Had the Skopar before. Like the Ultron better for its image rendition properties, so the Skopar got sold.
50/1.5 Nokton. Hate the fact that it's been in the repair shop twice, but bought it used so I have no clue what the previous owner did to it. Awesome image quality, especially f4-5.6.
75/2.5 Heliar. I love the way it renders images. It's not as sharp as the 90 or 50, but does render great tones.
90/3.5 Lanthar. Rarely used and will probably sell. It's sharp but the 75 gets used more. Will post a review on my CV Fansite (http://www.cosina-voigtlander.com/) as soon as I can put the images together.

I only recently got my first rangefinder, a vintage S3, which came equipped with a Jupiter 8 50 f2. It's so-so, but I wanted at least one wider and one longer lens, so I just got the CV 21/f4. Shot my first roll yesterday, so I don't know what the image quality is like just yet.
I'm still learning the basics of focus/compose/shoot, and as yet, don't think my compositions will be as good as I get with my SLRs.
I plan on buying the CV 85 next month, and likely will replace the 50 with either a Nikkor or the CV when I rob my little Sister's piggy bank.

Things change over time.
It's now January 2009, and I've got CV 21 f4 and 35 2.5, as well as Nikkors: 85 f2, 105 2.5 and 135 3.5.

rbsinto,

I do not know if any J8s that were built for the Nikon mount. It is slightly different from the Contax mount, with the J8s were built for (Kiev bodies). While they will fit on her, they are just off enought that it might be causing your problem.

I am not sure which I would go with, a good old Nikkor 50 or a CV. The Nikkor will be internal mount, where as the CV will be external (slightly bigger). I have a chrome 50/1.4 Nikkor and love it.

Rather than a CV, look for a 105/2.5 Nikkor, it should actually cost you less. The 105 is slightly longer but a GREAT lens. The Nikkor 85/2 is great also. Speed helps and the S3 can focus them accurately even really close-up.

Just recently bought the 28/1.9 Ultron. I haven't had any sample shots back from it yet, but I'm hoping it will do me nicely in a focal length I use only occasionally (but really miss when I want to use it and don't have it).

Looking at the figures, there is a weird correlation between 35/1.2 and 50/2.5
owners (I don't count 50/2 H, since it is a much newer lens than the other
two). Is there any reason? They are such a different lenses...

The 40 1.4 is what I've been keeping on the camera despite the fact that I have some very fine lenses in my 35 lux ASPH and 50 lux. But that could be because I just got it a few days ago...

Hi Ferider...

Anyways here is my list:
28/3.5...
I'd be interested to hear what you think of the 28/3.5 - It doesn't look like all that many people have them and they seem to be talked about only rarely. I ask because it's the only remaining CV lens I might possibly buy - I shoot mainly while I'm traveling (so small and light is the order of the day), and mostly in bright tropical light (so I have no need for wide apertures). As for a viewfinder, I reckon the 28 field of view is pretty close to the full frame of the viewfinder on my Bessa-R, and I think it would make a great one-lens outfit for carrying round towns and cities - any thoughts?

(After recently acquiring a 2nd hand 50/2.5, my list is now 15/4.5, 21/4, 25/4, 35/2.5, 50/2.5, 75/2.5 - I definitely feel that the gap between 25 and 35 is too big, and 28 is probably the focal length I've used most over the years).

Doug

Hi Alan -- I think the 28 is a very useful focal length, distinctly different from 25 and 35, nice to have as another choice. For "touristy travel" the 25 focal length may be even better in old narrow streets and constricted interiors. If there's a problem with the 25/4 it's the slow speed + lack of RF coupling + need for external viewfinder.

All three of these drawbacks can now be overcome while staying with 25mm (sounds like you're a good candidate for a Bessa R4 too!) but a few years ago my solution was the CV 28/3.5 put on my CLE. But, that was a mistake for me. Beautiful little lens, excellent performance, but still too slow... I had tried to economize too much. So I sold it and bit the bullet for a 28/2.0 Summicron; wow, love it! Small and fast and wide and lovely output.

The sun still sets in the tropics, and then it gets dark. :) And in-between there are sunrises and sunsets, and interiors to deal with. Temples in Asia, castles and cathedrals in Europe, evening entertainment in the Caribbean, dim museums and shops and aquariums and restaurants. The Polynesian Cultural Center on Oahu.... Need to crank that lens open! Maybe you could use at least ONE lens faster than f/2.5?

Hi Alan -- I think the 28 is a very useful focal length, distinctly different from 25 and 35, nice to have as another choice.
I'm glad you agree. Some people think it's too close to a 35, while others think that if you have a 25 you don't need a 28, but 28 really does seem different to me and I do miss not having a 28 for RF.

For "touristy travel" the 25 focal length may be even better in old narrow streets and constricted interiors. If there's a problem with the 25/4 it's the slow speed + lack of RF coupling + need for external viewfinder
Yes, there is that. But I tend to leave my 25 on a Bessa-L for a whole shooting session, and I'm quite happy with hyperfocal focusing, so those problems really don't bother me much.

(sounds like you're a good candidate for a Bessa R4 too!)
Hehe, yes, the thought had struck me - but seeing as I have an L that I use with my wide lenses, and the R4 is quite expensive, I think I'd better put such ideas on hold for a while :)

Yes, that's all true. But over the years I've never really felt much need for fast lenses - I've mainly used SLRs with slow-ish zoom lenses, and only got interested in rangefinders fairly recently. Maybe it's just my style that doesn't much call for fast lenses - even with my SLR gear, the only lenses I have that are faster than f/2.8 are my two Zuiko fifties (an f/1.8 and an f/1.4) but I've never actually taken them travelling. But I guess the other side of it is that a faster lens might expand my style a bit - hmmm, I'll have to think about that.

Anyway, thanks for your thoughts - they're very valuable.

Of those the 40 gets the most use due to its versatility and compactness. I have a Zeiss 25 and will probably get the Zeiss 18 when its released so the 21 is most under threat. Such a compact lens though I may just assign it semi-permanently to a screwmount film body. I rarely use the 12, just not getting on with it for some reason :s

I've been extremely happy with the 35 1.2, 28 1.8 and previously owned the 50 1.5 ( sorry I sold it). I'm building a light weight kit for travel whe I don't want to feel like I'm on assignment and will buy a 35PII and 50 f2 coll. I'm actually debating whether to make it a 35 PII and 75 or 35, 50 and my old 90 elmarit v1. I've got more RF's than I know what to do with but got a really good deal on a mint in box olive R2 and will use it with this combo.

Leica M have been my main 35 system for 40 years and last year i picked up a ZI and 25, 35 and 50 f2 ZM lenses. The year before I picked up come CV lenses and now the R2. One thing I've learned is Leica isn't the only ball game and the CV and Zeiss lenses can top or equal Leicas glass even disregarding price. I'm also in love with the R2 and probably like the ZI over my new MP's.

I've only had my Bessa kit for about 5 months now, but I already want several more lenses. I don't feel like I've used the ones I have enough to justify adding more, but it won't be too long before I get something wider...21, 25 or 28,...I can't decide which. First, I have to get a Coolscan V ED. ...Dear Santa,

Do folks really agree that the entire CV line is "great"?
I own the 28/1.9 and the 15/4.5, and have been happy with both of them, particularly the 15. The 28 is a nice performer, but it's bigger than I would like, and the build quality isn't perfect.
I'd be interested in hearing more from people who have owned or sampled enough to be able say, which of the CV lenses really stand out performance wise vis a vis the rest of the line, and compared to the competition.
By the way, I was recently in the market for a 35mm, and looked at the CV offerings, but decided on the Zeiss Biogon 2.0, and am extremely pleased with that choice. I had a hankering to try something besides CV, and in fact, the Zeiss produces what strikes me as a somewhat different look.
Does anyone else think there can be said to be a family look in Voigtlander glass?

12mm, 21mm (x2- one in Nikon/Contax mount, one in M), 28 f/1.9, 40mm (MC), and 75mm.

I've had very mixed results with the lenses and have resolved to NEVER buy another without testing it on my M8.

12mm Is fine. 21mm is very nice wide open (or close- it doesn't sharpen up stopped down, and gets very dull after f/8) if I'm careful about flare. 28mm? Has an attractive look, but don't look to close- at no reliable use is it critically sharp, surprising me with awesome clarity and color, while on the same card showing me that I missed focus in situations that should have been perfect..
The 40mm has been a Real Pain, but is now focusing correctly (after taking the rear mount off and reassembling the thing). It does focus "past infinity," but is finally accurate on the rangefinder. It's finally becoming a lens I use- the back focusing issues had rendered (sorry: pun intended) it "poor" at best. It was my second copy from the distributor, and set my resolve to never buy a CV lens without taking minimal pictures on my own M8. Also, resolve is set to get a rational return policy with the lenses.
The 75mm front focuses pretty badly. It'll go off with the 40 and 28 eventually to DAG for re-adjustment, though the 40mm is now a low priority to send.

I have to admit to a dark secret! I have them all!!! I suspect that it is an incurable disease, but I do aquire them whenever they are available - sometimes even in duplicate!
Oh well, it would have been ruinous to do the same with Leica's output. The VC allows "budget" pricing without any noticable lack of performance and they also tend to issue interesting lenses that nobody else does. Lenses like the 12f5.6, the 15f4.5, the snap shop Skopar 25f4, the 35f1.2 and the Heliar 50f3.5 and f2. Oh then we have the choices in the 35/40's with MC and SC - the list goes on!

I just received my first, a MC 35/1.4. To me, this lens was something of a no brainer. I started my kit with a ZM 50/2 and wanted something faster at the 35mm FL. The CV 35/1.4 is tiny, fast, reasonably priced, and the samples from the Flickr group really impressed me. I came across some controversy about the bokeh, but just about any lens is going to have bokeh issues at f/1.4 with a stressful background. At f/2 and beyond, the examples were sharp with pleasing bokeh, and f/1.4 is there when you need it. The CV 35/1.2 was too big, the asph Summilux too expensive, and almost everything else too slow (for what I wanted at this FL). My choice pretty much came down to the CV 35/1.4 versus the pre-asph Summilux, and I chose the CV for the lower price.

Now I'm trying to decide between the ZM 28/2.8 and the CV 28/2.

That's my reasoning exactly for choosing the MC Nokton 35/1.4. It's a great little lens, and I could not be happier with it. I even chose it above the ZM Biogon 35/2 which I sold once I got it. I did go with the ZM Biogon 28/2.8 for my M-mount 28 though.

There seems to be no poll option for 'none' ? That isn't due to any percieved quality problem, just that I have already acquired Leitz and Jupiter lenses that do what I want.

Which is not to say that I haven't considered the CV super-wides recently. Who knows what might arrive in the next month or so ?

I was looking at the poll results and noticed that I entered three lenses. 50mm Nokton, 28mm Ultron and 90mm Apo Lanthar. A year or so on those are gone and have been replaced with the 15mm Heliar, the 35mm Nokton and the 75mm f2.5. I don't actually use the 75mm much at all but I NEVER used the 90mm Apo Lanthar. The 15mm Heliar and the 35mm Nokton get used constantly!

Both are excellent on film bodies and on my M8.

Have the 35/1.7 Ultron, but may sell it.

I traded a Canon L for a CV 35 f/1.2 yesterday, now I just have to get an M-mount camera again to use it on! I also have the 40 SC, 75 and 90mms, I am rather fond of the 90 as it is sharp as all heck. I don't particulary like the 40, primarily because one of my right-hand fingers all too often makes its way into the corner of the photo! I'll have to get the hood for it someday methinks, as it stands the lens is simply too small for me.

15/4.5, 21/4, 35/2.5, 50/1.5 and 75/2.5. Thinking about a 28/3.5 for the R4 when it arrives.

I bought the 28/3.5 after the R4 arrived. I just recently bought a used 50/2.5 from my friend Gary. It is the black version. I was hoping to get a chrome one. The GAS has come to an end for a while as the purchase of a home and improvements to same has consumed all of my spare funds.

Hello Steve,

Just a few months ago, someone sold on ebay the 101 Jahre Set which included a blue Bessa T and the chrome Heliar. The seller had bought the set new, but when it arrived to him, the Bessa T has a non-functioning RF. He sold the set for the market price of the lens alone. I still have to get the T fixed.

The lens is wonderful, even though its max aperture is 3.5. I always have plenty of light in Florida, so the small max aperture is not a problem. I think, Tom calls it a Summer Lens.

The Heliar is very light. This is also a plus.

I've got the 35mm f1.2 and recently I bought the 40mm f1.4 SC on the classifieds.
My first impression with the 40mm was not that enthusiastic, but as I'm getting more and more accustomed to its handling, I'm now starting to love it. Plus, its image quality is outstanding and bokeh is nowhere as ugly as you can usually read, to me it's beautiful!
As for the 35mm f1.2, well, that's a completely different story. It would be my only lens, but its size (and weight!) discourages me to bring it with me as my everyday lens. I usually take it with me only when I go out with the express intention of taking photos, otherwise it rests on the shelf. Too bad, because it's an excellent lens and I feel a bit guilty of not using it as it would deserve.
