When I registered, Epson said that I would be getting a bonus gift with a case and some other stuff. Anyone hear about the status of that giveaway?

Nope. Same as the prior poster. Bought the camera in early December, no word since then. I registered online (as they mentioned online would work just as well as the paper registration for the gift).

I think I'll hold off on registering mine until people actually receive their gifts, so that I know it's not just a marketing ploy to scam me for my information.

I just received my "registration gift" today. The Tamrac bag and Element CD came as advertised, along with a "certificate of authenticity." It states "The World's First Digital Rangefinder Camera" along with my serial number AND Date of Manufacturing. My serial # is 181X and manufactured on Oct. 13th, 2004. Also it has 3 hand signed signatures by CEO of Epson America, Gerneral Manager and Manager of Seiko Epson Corporation.

When did you send it off? And did you send it by mail or electronically? Thanks and congrats!

I got my bag today. I had mentioned something in the dpreview.com Epson forum, and Phil Amato from Epson handled it. He stated that you must fill in the serial # of the camera and your proper address or the gift won't be sent.

BTW, the bag is great for taking the R-D1 and my 20D and two lenses around. If I want to shoot both formats in a trip, it's perfect. My 17-85mm lens fits nicely in the little cubby, the 20D rides on the left, and the Epson R-D1 and lenses fit below (at 1/3 of the size of the rest of the kit)!

Bob,
I did the registration online on the last week of Dec. 04.

I wonder what they will do when you have gotten a replacement camera and filled the online regs twice. Maybe two bags!
Cheers,
Chris

There was no mention of any registration gift when I registered with Epson Hong Kong. :(

I've received mine. Came about two weeks ago, if I remember correctly.

The bag is nice, but I don't have enough R-D 1 stuff to fill it!

Thanks -- I decided to register online. One can never have enough camera bags. :D Andrew, you can try doing the same to see if Epson sends you any freebies.

Oh no, I was afraid of that! If the bag fits both the 20D and the R-D1, it is too big for the R-D1. I thought as much by looking at the picture but I couldn't tell the dimensions of the bag. I was hoping it was a small bag. I bought the R-D1 to get away from carrying the 20D. I certainly don't want to carry both cameras at the same time.

Does anyone know of a good small bag for he R-D1, that would fit a couple of lenses, and batteries, that's it. I have the LowePro Stealth Reporter 200, which I bought as a small bag for the 20D, but I feel it is too large for the R-D1.

I've got a Tamrac belt bag that's perfect for the R-D1. It holds the camera body with one lens mounted plus one other lens in the main compartment, and batteries and memory cards in the front compartment.

The model number isn't marked on it, and I couldn't find it in Tamrac's online catalog, so am attaching a picture in case you want to have a hunt.

I bought a small army surplus "bread bag" almost exactly the dimensions of the R-D1 + Leica 35/1.4 ASPH + hood. It's burlap and provides zero cushioning, but with the strap around my torso the R-D1 rests up tightly against my side, and the whole bag disappears beneath my jacket with very little bulge when I'm out prowling the streets.

I have a few different padded bag/backpack options for the 20D (or when I take both cameras along) but if I had a pocket big enough for the R-D1 in my jacket, I'd just drop the camera in there instead. The "bread bag" was the closest alternative. I got the R-D1 so I don't have to use it with a "real" camera bag in the first place! (YMMV of course.)

I registered with Epson HK already, but there was not a word about gift at all. I use Domke 803 for my R-D1. It will take the R-D1 with a lens attached, and there is space left a an Epson P-2000 and a few more lens.

I was looking into getting an Epson P-2000 -- you can't zoom in on the R-D1 files when you're shooting in raw mode, right? And does it incorporate your "film" settings in the view for raw files (for example, if you have it set on black and white)?

andrewch

When you view a raw file on the P-2000, it is the Jpeg thumbnail that you are looking at. Therefore, you cannot zoom into it like you can with Jpeg files, but it retains the film settings that you shot with. If you shoot in the B&W mode, the thumbnail is also in B&W.

It is an odd choice of bag for a leica-style shooter, unless you have 10 lenses and a visoflex laying around that you always want to take with you...

I have a TREMENDOUS bag for you. It's the Tamrac Velocity 2. A small messenger pouch with two dividers, you can fit 2 lenses like the 50 Nokton or the 28 Ultron on either side, and a pancake or heliar lens in the middle at the bottom, then put the camera with another lens facing downward on top.

The side pouch is useful for the battery. The front pouch holds my tiny little flash (an auto model from sunpack), the finder for the 15, and the filters. There is not a web pouch on the inside of the top flap, but there is a nice pouch on the front of the outer pocket that is great for ditching a polarizer I'm not using right now. I can also jam my Leica CL in there with a body cap as it fits in one of the pouches.

It's the perfect bag for bringing most, if not all, of your leica gear. Otherwise I'd just take either a bag to carry the 35 f/2.5 and the camera (little digital pouch works) or put the lenses in my coat pockets.

Yeah, I think that's what I have in mind, the camera bag that isn't a camera bag. I have a Tumi backpack I carry all the time but that doesn't work well for the R-D1. I think I'm going to switch to a messenger style bag that will have enough space for the R-D1 so that I can carry it with me all the time. I'm trying to make it as easy as possible to carry the camera so that I don't have an excuse for not shooting.

When trying to locate a bag for the 20D, I initially purchased one of those large camera backpacks that have stiff sides. I found myself bashing people in the street and in stores so I had to return the thing for something unobtrusive.

I didn't see any offer of a free gift in the U.K. but we were promised a Cetificate of Authentication if you registered.

I registered online in January but I still haven't seen the Certificate. Perhaps they will incluse a gift as well as I've had to wait? :D

Jim,

I'm in the UK and I registered my R-D1 by post and online. I received my certificate (and R-D1 Owners Club card) about a month ago. However, Epson either didn't put any stamps on the envelope, or they fell off, and the postman wanted to charge me to receive it!

Well I finally got an e-mail from Greg Barfoot at Epson Europe today (nearly two months after registering) asking me to confirm my R-D1's serial number for membership of the Owners Club. Strange as I filled this in when I registered?

Anyway hopefully membership and the certificate should arrive soon. :) No mention of a free gift though. :(

I did receive the tamrac bag and elements. The bag is really good. The certificate is a nice touch, but a second battery would have been a great idea...

Well Epson Europe seem to have gone in to overkill on the Certificates. I got my 1st one on the 25th March but have just recieved a second one in the post this morning (10 weeks later). The interesting bit is that I was registered as Epson Club member 0022 in March but now I'm 0026 only 4 on. I know they have sold a few more than that in Europe.

We were only offered the certificate in the U.K. not a free gift. Anyone get a second bag? :D :D

I registered online March 16, and have not received the certificate/gift yet. Judging by earlier postings, I shouldn't be worried...yet.

TO all of you patient people out there. I finalled called Epson and told them I did not receive my 'gifts' yet. They looked up my registration form and lo and behold they never got it- I not only registered online but sent in the card using snail mail! So what to do? I insisted that their customer relations dept contact me which they did. Ultimately I did get the bag but no Elements or 'Certificate'.
Frankly,I think there customer service dept. does not have their act together. I am tired of the phone calls and used Photoshop CS2 exclusively anyway so passed on contacting them until I can find the time- would rather spend the time on photos than hanging on the phone.
The bag is a really nice one so worth the effort to get it free- probalby retails for about $40.
For those of you waiting CALL tthem on the phone- they probably do not have your registration!!!! Andf good luck.

I registered in early January and the first Certificate came in March (See above) but only after I contacted them. The second Certificate and membership just came about 5 months after registering.

In the U.K. I got two copies of Photoshop Elements 2 (not that I use it) in the box and both were listed on the box contents.

Is the serial number the one engraved on the accessory shoe? It was the only one I could find on the camera. Nothing was marked on the box.

Jim Watts

Yes. The serial number is on the accessory ans should start with two zeros.
