tell me what you think of this...(be kind)

we pick a time frame, let's say from today till aug 15th, and we shoot a new pic for a new avatar.

has to be an rf image

has to be new and shot within the time frame

and we all change our avatars on aug 15th and promise to keep that same avatar for at least 2 weeks.

and, no equipment photos!

"No guts; no glory!" Works for me! I'm in! My current one is from a (forgive me for THIS one!) Nikon Coolpix digital camera taken in Colorado 4 years ago, so it can do with a refresh. Besides, that'll give me an excuse to work with this new ZI and my lenses to find that right avatar AND publish from a film scan. Woo Hoo! ;o)

I concur.. good idea.. but NO EQUIPMENT PHOTOS like Roland said :D

As for me.. I'm going to see if I can get a wilder looking one than the one I have currently.. I think the voigtlander 15mm should do just fine.. ;)

Good idea!!
No equipment, but something thatīs different from what we have had till today.
May it include self portraits?
If yes, can it be thought (the liveware) as part of the euipment?

Ok, just kiddinī...

Cheers

Sounds like fun! There's some members that have avatars that I always associate with them, and it always throws me off for a bit when they change them. I'm thinking "Who is THIS person who has 158,522 posts that I don't recognize?? Oh, it's Joe with a new avatar."

I always wondered about that Nico ... Great photo, though.

Roland.

Thanks for not chasing me with flaming torches :D ... and for the comment too.

BtW .. I shot it when I was already Rff addicted and looking for a BessaR to buy ...

I like the idea, except if I understand the rules correctly, I now have to go out and shot shome photos, instead of spending all my time here and on ebay.

What's up with that Joe?

i'm curious as to who may already have started shooting with a new avatar in mind?

will you shoot differently with a specific goal in mind?

i have never shot a photo with the idea of making it an avatar so i am wondering if my approach might be different...

Any particular theme we should all have? or a free for all.

Ash
07-07-2006, 13:09
I think it'll be best for a free for all, or else people may double up on potential images.

Maybe a favourite topic/subject matter?

FrankS

Everyone's approach is different. You can't explain magic.

The only thing with an avatar, a very small sized picture, you wouldn't try to use an image that relies on fine detail to succeed.

Sorry for your loss. However, I don't think Joe established any rule that you had to keep your new avatar for the next ten years, without ever going back.

I was starting to get bored with mine anyway.
Hmm... no fine detail and no equipment shots. OK, no nude self portrait from me!:D

Well, I was out this afternoon (it's Saturday afternoon here) with this in mind. I want something that will be recognisable when shrunk down to avatar size, and that represents where I'm coming from (geographically at least). I hope I can also use some of the shots to eventually contribute to the "Your home town" thread.

Mind you, I did get a funny look from one of the security guards when I asked if I could photograph his shadow against the wall.

Count me in.

I will also change the text under the new avatar for the 2 weeks its up to be something like "Avatar Challenge".

So we're on for NOW unitil Aug 15 for shooting and then we all do the switch on August 16? :)

ClaremontPhoto
07-08-2006, 11:25
The text under the Custom Avatar box says "Note: The maximum size of your custom image is 125 by 125 pixels or 19.5 KB (whichever is smaller)."

1 Does this mean maximum screen dimension of 125x125, and a maximum file size of 19.5KB and both conditions must be met?

2 Does the size rule apply only to avatars we upload to be stored at RFF, or does it apply equally to avatars we host ourselves away from RFF and provide a link?

You may guess that my early tests have fallen foul of the rules, and I've spent a day trying all sorts of compression techniques.

switch on the 15th rich.

Kyle
07-08-2006, 23:43
Sounds fun! I don't know if this was implied or not, but it woud be cool if on August 15 Joe starts a new thread, maybe titled "Your new avatar" and we can all post full size images of our avatar. Just a thought...

BTW, do self-portraits while holding a camera fall under the "no equipment shots" rule? :)

Rich Silfver

You may guess that my early tests have fallen foul of the rules, and I've spent a day trying all sorts of compression techniques.

Try to 'save for web'. PS often saves a thumbnail version of your image and that adds to the filesize sometimes without you seeing it. Save for Web should work well (and yes - size is for both pixels and K's when uploading to RFF).

Thanks Rich, tech testing continues today using an old image.

I was going to take photos today for a 'Tourism' exhibition and competition. I had the locations and the shots all planned: happy familes doing happy things such as mountain biking and canoeing. But I just read the rules (I know) and it says that the photos must reflect the cultural heritage and the natural beauty of the area.

So I'll waste time on avatars instead, while I plan for the other.

Look to your left, folks. That's my new avatar. We had a wet, foggy morning last week and I noticed the color of the bottles on the windowsill at mom's house. Jupiter-12 (cropped from the center of the frame) in a Zorki 3m.

I just got back to town, so I'm a few days late. I took this shot in Germany in the hopes that it would make a good new avatar. As per the rules, I will leave it up for at least two weeks. Rob and Raid, I really like your new looks.

Everyone's approach is different. You can't explain magic.

The only thing with an avatar, a very small sized picture, you wouldn't try to use an image that relies on fine detail to succeed. Roger that, Frank (and yours is one of my faves, BTW). Since I was late getting in on this, I'll try for what seems to be following up on this). ;)
