Hello dear RFF-members,

this will be the thread to the RFF Postcard Project Nr. 10

Before I explain what it is, how it works, let me say, that I'm truly sorry,
that it took me so long, after I already got some PMs asking about the next
round and said it would be in the next days, but this was weeks ago... So, very
sorry, it was a busy time.

Now, to the project: It's already the 10th time, that we organize an exchange of
postcards between RFF-Members from all over the world. Everybody, who wants to
receive and send postcards made by other members here, are welcome to join. The
more international, the better, I think.

Here is, how it works:

If you don't know about the project, this is, what it's about: We collect
participants, exchange our addresses (I will organize that), make postcards
prints for all others in this round and send them. So everybody will get great
postcards from all over the world (ideally...) and have real prints instead of
online-pics only.

RFF-PP is a picture postcard exchange. Every participant selects
one of his photographs and makes postcards from it
(make prints yourself, order postcards online - it is up to you. I always
ordered online), which we then send to each other participant of this round. Please
choose only one picture (this is really the hard part!), so that
every participant ends up with the same collection of picture postcards.

Organisation: To participate, please sent a mail to rff-at-mempool-dot-net (that's me) containing the following information:

Subject: RFF Postcard Project 10
Your real Name
Your Address, as you would write it on an incredibly important postcard to yourself from somewhere far away in the world (including line-breaks and country name, as this is an international project)
RFF User-Name

I promise, that all your data is only used for the purpose of this project and
will never given away for anything else! - This also means, I don't have
addresses kept of previous rounds, so it is not enough to mail me with simply
stating, you are in again - I need the currently valid address.
Timeframe: You can sent me your mails for participation until Saturday, August, 4., 2018, about four weeks from now on. After that, I close the list and send every participant the complete list one day later. Then I give another five weeks to shoot/choose the picture, create the postcards and mail them. Meaning, please try to send your postcards 1st of September, 2018, latest.

If I remember correctly, we had about 40 people each time, so this is what you
can expect this time, too, I think. Maybe a few less, since it's summ vacation
time and maybe not everybody will see the post.

I missed no round until now and I can promise you from looking at all the great
cards of the previous rounds, that this is worth the effort! It's a treasure, so
please participate! - RFF is a really great place for this type of projects.

Let's have some fun, start mailing!

Best regards,
Stephan

PS: Don't worry, if I don't answer each question to the project or
participation-mail immediatly (could be a day or two). I'm on vacation the next three weeks in Japan,
shooting the picture, that you will get...

This is timely for me. It's been a while since I've shot color film and have been wanting to get back to it with my Zeiss ZI. I just ordered some Kodak Pro Image 100 to try it out and my old standard (Fuji Superia 400) so my entry will come from one of those rolls.

Also, I would add Vistaprint to the list of printers here in U.S. I used them for the last 2 RFF Postcard Projects. Worked fine.

Didn't get a mail from you, yet.

However, we are now at 21 people, me included.
If still in doubt, think of that: more than 20 unique prints from fellow RFF-members can be yours!

Why unique? Because we already noticed that the marks and traces on the postcards from transportation and post offices add to their emotional value.

Hello all,

thanks for all the mails to be in this round. We are now 23 People, me included, so there is room for more!

Anyway, this morning I had the second PM, that a mail wasn't answered by me. Both were from people with a gmail-address. There is an issue between the provider of my internet-domain and gmail, so that mails don't get delivered. (Technical stuff: In the past, the whole IP-address range of my provider was set on spam-black-lists - mistakenly. Then my provider, the biggest in Germany wasn't very smart in responding to this error, and so both, gmail and Strato, never completely resolved that issue... - Well, so much for the free Internet)

Solution:
If you are on gmail and I don't answer in two days, send me a PM to make sure, I got your message.

Best regards,
Stephan

Hello again,

so, after two days with some minor correction, the final address list is ready. I will send it by mail in a few minutes. Please contact me, if you don't receive the list.

This time we are 30 people, so everybody has to send 29 postcards and hopefully receives as many. Last time, there were some complaints about too many missing postcards. So please make sure to write addresses carefully and send postcards in time.

About time: As stated in post #1: please try to send the postcards latest until September 1. (Earlier is better, of course...) So people don't have to wait forever. Especially overseas can take quite some time to arrive.

Now: Let's have fun and create some nice postcards!

Best regards,
Stephan

My Ph.D. dissertation was typed up with SCRIPT, which was the initial software that led to LATEX. Did you know this fact? :)

Not the fact about your Ph.D.
But I know about IBMs SCRIPT, never used it, though, only the roff-family of typesetting programs before TeX/LaTeX (and before I wrote my own markup-interpreter, that exports to LaTeX...:D). However, I doubt, that Donald Knuth would agree, that SCRIPT is the initial SW, that led to TeX. The concepts how text and commands are processed, are totally different (Markup -> SCRIPT vs. turing-complete macro language -> TeX), and his motivation was to reproduce the "classic" typesetting process used for books until the mid 1970ies, before computers took over and made typesetting a nightmare for aesthetically demanding people.

Anyway: being able to write printable documents in SCRIPT definitely assigns the alpha-geek (http://catb.org/jargon/html/A/alpha-geek.html)-attribute to you. Respect. ;)

Thank you for the details on TEX and SCRIPT. Both share the chances of getting back a mess after compiling a document with either one. I was using draft manuals to guide me with SCRIPT. Virginia Tech's Graduate School had a "thesis" macro that students were encouraged to use when they type up theses or dissertations. I somehow managed to type my dissertation with SCRIPT.

Intheviewfinder, you're welcome. The thing to figure out for yourself is whether TouchNote's postage rates work better for you than normal postage rates. For me in Australia mailing overseas it definitely did, not to mention the printing of the cards, and the postage time. I bought a large job lot of "credits" which brings the cost per card down.

Cool, the cards are getting out there! :)

I've received Peter Yeh's and Red Rock Bill's cards so far—lovely, both of them—as well as my self-send (I always send one to myself to record the send date). I hope a couple more arrive tomorrow, because the day after I'm leaving on a six week trip and won't see any until October.

I wasn't focusing on doing the camera tech thing on the cards themselves... But for anyone who might be curious, the photo on my card was made with the Leica M-D typ 262 fitted with a Voigtländer Color Skopar 28mm f/3.5. Exposure was ISO 400 @ f/5.6 @ 1/125 second. I made the cards by gang-printing 4-up the backside graphics and addresses in two passes, then gang-printed 4-up the image, then cut and trimmed all of them to size. The paper is Epson Hot Press Natural, printed on an Epson P600 printer.

Fun stuff! I look forward to seeing the rest of the cards when I get back from travel. :D

onwards!

Thanks! Actually that was taken during a weekend trip to NYC--the C train in Manhattan. The Red Line is "quaint" by comparison. But it does have amazing views of the Charles River, which I'm sure my son will love when I take him into Boston.

I put the cards in the mail Saturday afternoon, so I'm pleasantly surprised that they're already arriving in mailboxes. You're a local, intheviewfinder, but it sounds like my card already made it out to New Mexico!

I have a wall painted with magnetic paint. When I receive a postcard I put them on the wall with rare earth magnets. They'll stay there for a few months. Eventually I put them in a 4x6 acid free storage box (it's about 11" long).

Hey analogangler and rfaspen

Don't want to break any hearts - I actually printed with my 4x5 enlarger. I don't have a good way to print these 6x13 images so what I do is tape them to a glass sheet I then sandwich into the spot where the negative carriers go.

Sorry for the absence my OS HD died (9/3 - photo files are fine) and I was scheduled to be in Philadelphia from the 9th until the 15th. I had to figure out what I wanted, order just before I left for Philly, and of course there was a delay. I got this new machine yesterday - a humdinger (latest tech - 1tb SSD).

In any case while I was down and during my visit to Philadelphia I received a bunch of cards making my total 23 thus far.

Dancers, water, abandon windmills, sculpture, mailboxes, wildlife (are shopping carts wildlife?)...
I love seeing another person's perspective. While I might not 'like' or 'catch the drift' until later I appreciate them all.

I arrived home from my six weeks traveling last evening—My gosh, what a great trip that was! :D

Welcoming me on my desk ... next to the piles of mail and packages to process!... I found 24 RFF Postcard #10 delights to view and enjoy, including my own. I've only just counted them so far: I'm saving the fun of looking through them for a little bit as I clean up the mess here and get a moment to relax and enjoy them.

Great stuff everyone!

I've processed through all the mail on my desk and found that there were three more postcards received, enclosed in envelopes. :) My total count now is 27..

It's been a hectic day ... I should soon have the time to look at them! :D

No worries -- I'll confess that I actually like getting one or two cards very late like this. It draws out the suspense and joy in an unpredictable, but pleasurable way. So, "thanks!" from me for supplying one of the things I enjoy most about the RFF projects. :)

Several days ago the last straggler card to arrive here in western Oregon was an orange bear. It was indeed a pleasant surprise because I thought no more cards were going to arrive. I think the bear came down from Edmonton. Cool.

I was away for 2 weeks and when I got back there was this nice Halloween card from FDarnell. Thank you very much, Paul!
That makes 26 cards for me. Hopefully the others, apart from jweber3rd's, have not got lost in the mail.

Hello all,

thank you for participating to all of you. I received some very pictures this round and I'm very happy with the results.

Rick reminded me, that one of the best things to this is, when the round is more or less over, everyone posts his/her picture here and writes a few words to it. Well, I think, the time has come...

Sorry Rick, that I didn't made it the other day as promised... But here it comes. This was my picture and I hope, all of you received it:

https://mempool.net/galleries/misc/rff10.jpg

It was shot this summer in Japan at the beach of Kamakura while we waited for the summer fireworks to start. The beach was crowded to the last place, so this picture does really show the opposite of the situation. Tele-lens perspective compression did the trick... It was shot with the Olympus Pen-F and the incredible 75mm/f1.8 lens.

When the fireworks started about an hour later, there was no place left to sit at the beach. The fireworks were started from a platform in the water about 300m from the beach and after about 10 minutes (the show lasted for about 2 hours) heavy clouds came to the beach and nothing could be seen of the show anymore, except for some distant colorful cloud-lighting...

Nevertheless, people were in good mood and applauded every visible sparkle and had their picknick at the beach until it was over. I loved it. During that trip, we saw quite a few very big fireworks in different places (Yokohama, Sumida/Tokyo, Kamakura and a few others), all were just perfect except for this one, which was totally ruined by the weather. However, people were so polite, mood was great. It's the one, that I remember with the most fond memories. The japanese people... that's it, why I love to be there.

Krotenblender, that's a great backstory, and I enjoyed your photo a lot. I've been to Japan a number of times, but never at the height of summer, so I have missed the big firework shows.

I don't have my photo uploaded on flickr (or any other image hosting site) so I can't link to it here. I explained a little of the backstory on the back of the postcard, so I'll not re-tell that again.

Some may have noticed the whitish blur in the middle of the photo. I don't want to do a complete demolition job on the overall romanticism of the image, but that was actually a plastic bag of leftover food (doggie bag!) from a Chinese restaurant that the woman was trying to hand to my wife -- the four of us had gone out to eat together. Mundane reality. But I've always loved the image with the strangely sharp foliage in the background and the blurred figures on left and right.

Not much of a back story for mine. I have been using a DJI Phantom 3 4K as a flying camera platform, watching regularly for the right weather and sky for photos of our lake. This one from late fall 2017, pretty much straight out of the camera with only minor adjustments.

This is Eastman Lake in Grantham NH. That's Grantham Mountain and Croyden Peak in the distance. Eastman is a planned community. There are homes all along the lake shore, but community policies keep the shoreline looking great. That's one of our five beaches in the foreground. #EastmanNH I have used these postcards to help promote the community.

Greatly enjoyed this postcard round! Thanks to all who participated!

Whew. Took me more than a month to look at and enjoy all these excellent postcards! Terrific work, everyone. I received 28 cards in total (so far ... :) ) and they're all delightful.

I like the notion of preparing a backstory post for the thread. I'll have to think about that and post it later. But thank you all for the photographs: A diverse collection of works.

Oh yes: And the suggestion of a Moleskine Memo Pockets (Large) to keep them all together was just right for me. I've put "RFF Postcard #10 - 2018" on the spine and it fits perfectly in my shelf full of photo treasures.

I was waiting in my car when a few skateboarders showed up next door to practice their moves on a loading dock and surrounding structures. By prefocusing and anticipating the shutter lag I managed to get a few usable shots.

Stephan - Count me among those who have received your card.

As for the backstory, it's on the card. the tldr version, my wife was at a conference in Chicago and I tagged along, because I could, and why not? She had some conference-y things to do, so I had some time to myself one evening. Found myself on Michigan Avenue, where it becomes the DuSable Bridge and the rest is a photograph.

Hi, this bear is painted a colour known as international distress orange. It's emerging onto the street from a concrete slab on the front lawn of a commercial art gallery.

I think it's great to have bears on city lawns, especially orange ones.

18 received here in London, one thing that struck me is how often they are damaged in transit which is a bit sad. Hopefully all of mine made it since they were in envelopes that would take the worst of the beating going through the sorting machines.

Personal favourite at this point, “Beach Crab” by jweber3rd. I am usually not a macro fan, but something about the colours, the depth of field, it speaks strongly to me on some level.
