Hey folks,

It's been a while and I think we are due for another postcard exchange. I thought I'll start the thread and I also volunteer to collect the addresses. Rob who has been organizing these in the past had a pretty good system so I am just going to adopt it for this round. I have contacted Rob to ask him if he is okay with me taking over this round and since I haven't heard back I decided to just go ahead. I am mostly going to use the text Rob developed because it is excellent. So here we go:

The idea is that we each make postcards of one of our own photos and send that card to everyone else who is playing. The same image for everyone. After we have all mailed our cards, we will each get a small photo show from around the world. And we will all have the same exhibit.

I will collect real addresses from whoever wants to join in.

I will NOT use those addresses for anything other than this project.

I will accept addresses UNTIL MARCH 1 and then send a list of all the addresses to each of you who are playing.

We all then will have another month to shoot, make, and mail postcards.

We each mail the same card to all the other folks on the list. So, if there are 40 people again, we each would mail 39 cards. Of the same image.

This is an international exercise and you all should keep that in mind.

I set no subject or gear restrictions. But these are postcards which means the image will be seen by all the people who handle the mail as it goes from you to the rest of us.

How the cards are made is up to each person; I have printed my own and have also used an on-line company to print my cards.

We are usually around 40-50 people.

To keep the mechanics of organizing this as simple as possible please PM me with RFF Postcard 7 as the subject line.

If you want to participate, I need you to send to me the following info:
Your name and address (including your country) in the correct format for your country.
your RFF username.
your email (so I can send you the full list of participants)

I will collect addresses from now until I wake up and check my messages on March 1.

I will take a day or two to make sure I have the list correct and will email the list to all of us.

Plan on mailing your cards out NO sooner than April 1.

And please have them all in the mail by May 1.

A few last things:

If the numbers of us who want to do this gets very large, I will let us all know in this thread and we can then decide what to do.

Thanks for joining in everyone!

If you all have any questions and or suggestions, please post them here in this thread!

This is one of my favourite things about RFF and I am looking forward to the postcards.

Cheers!

At the risk of sounding like an advertising, for the past three rounds I used moo.com and was VERY happy with the results. I printed both black and white and colour cards and both were excellent.

Printing cards in the darkroom is a nice touch and other participants certainly appreciate the effort, but if you have to make 40 of the same photograph, it might get a bit tedious ;)

Bojan

I have used Moo in the past , agree, very god results.
being that Im only printing one image, it cant be that hard, can it.? :)
Repetitive, but not hard. should blow by them in no time once I get my base exposure for the first one, or I might go crazy, either way fun times.

Thanks for organizing! I have been in all of them and they are fun.

I have used MOO.com to print cards and have been happy with the product they produce. Mailing costs for the USA is 0.35 cents domestic and $1.20 for International postage. To print 50 cards usually runs about $42.00, so there are some expenses when participating but the cards received from around the world make it all worth it.

Hopefully we have another great turn out from the RFF membership for Part 7 of the RFF Postcard Project!

PM on the way in a few moments ......

How frowned upon is it to indicate an interest in participating, but in the end not be able to do so? I would very much like to participate, but I've been out of work for some time and unfortunately I'm not seeing that changing anytime soon. Should I say I'm in, and hope for a change in fortunes? Or sit this one out? Thank you kindly.

This might be just me, but I'd say throw your name in. Being out of work is tough. If all turns out well on the job front, it'll be a nice treat. If you need to withdraw, just send me a quiet private message and I can take care of it ;) Nobody will be upset about it, many of us have been in similar situation.

Good luck in your job search.

I'd love to join in again too. I think I have missed a couple. I had a cerebral aneurysm last year and have forgotten many things. The other day a noticed a pile of postcards in the office and thought "Wow, I must be very popular and have many friends". Then I noticed they all had something to do with an RFF postcard project and I went googling and found out about it online. Worked backwards and assumed I must be ricnak. So there, count me in.

I'll print my cards via Moo. They are quick but from my experience of previous rounds shipping can take a couple of weeks (unless shipped in an express way which is quite expensive). Therefore in order to be within pur planned timetable it's important to know how many we are as soon as possible, thanks.

I've been sitting on the fence for a while, mostly because I'm in the middle of a very intense period at work. But in the end I decided that I enjoyed Postcard Project 6 too much to sit this one out. If I can manage to get my darkroom set up, I'll try wet printing them. I'll do my best to get them in the mail by the end of April, but I hope people will be understanding if they're a little late!

I have tried to contact him twice but did not get a response nor did I receive a postcard from him in round 6. I’m hoping he is fine. We swapped prints two years ago. I have been concerned about him because it is not the manner I have come to know.

By the way, stamps costed me 4x more then the postcards :D

Right! I've been buying a package of stamps here and there since we decided to do this. The stamps are ridiculously expensive.

My cards have been shipped to me from Moo a couple of weeks ago, but are stuck in Halifax - oh Canada Post.

I'm kind of slow off the mark. But I just (after a last minute change of mind) have uploaded an image to Moo and designed a card. But last time I participated there was one paper choice and now there are two. Lots of folks seem to be using Moo so does anyone have thoughts on the standard v. luxe papers? Is the latter just heavier or really nicer?

And in my mailbox today were the first two cards -- a lovely river scene from Petr in Prague and a similarly lovely woman making a votive offering at Paris's Notre Dame from Don in Missouri.

For the sake of this project I can't think of a reason to justify the added (nearly three times the price!) expense. The difference is more about the tactile feel and weight of the paper rather than the quality of the printing/image. It seems better suited to something like a wedding invite. That said, if you want to spring for the Luxe paper, I wouldn't mind receiving one!

I just placed my moo order for standard

I had a moo-rant last time I did the project, the size of the postcard never matches a standard image crop size, and I don't get the safe area thing - just tell me what's on the card or not, it doesn't help me that the border area "may show a line/bit of the background"

I have always chosen the standard and have felt they were great value. There is now a choice between a matte and glossy finish on the photo side of the card which I do not remember having that option in the past. I did chose the matte for this order.

My order is currently in route from MOO with a ETA of 04/12/2016. Should be in the mail to everyone by the end of next week.

As of today, 4 cards received! :)

I know I live in a beautiful place, but sometimes a little ...strange :)

First I went to the post office to buy stamps but they didn't have stamps!
So I ordered them specifying for cards and destinations...
Yesterday they called me telling my ordered stamps where ready, I went there today and found the stamps, but...

But there are not stamps corresponding the needed value according to the destinations...therefore they combined more stamps to reach the value!

So as an example stamps to Australia need to be 2,90 EUR...I received 2x1 EUR, + 1 x 0.60 + 2 x 0.15 Total = 2,90 Not bad if only there is enough place on the card for all these stamps! And some are ....huge !

Of course having known this in advance I could design a different layout ...Only solution was to put the stamp in an envelope which means I'm re-writing all the addresses....

There will be a small delay in sending all my cards (a few already sent!) I'm confident in a couple of days to be able to do it! Please be patient!

yesterday my order arrived from MOO.

I had to make 2 or 3 trips to the post office and accumulate my stamps. They don't seem to keep many postcard or international letter stamps on hand.

I've received 8 cards so far! The postal service has managed to damage all but one. They're all still enjoyable images though. My wife is enjoying this project almost as much as I am. I suspect we have an additional participant in any future RFF Postcard Projects. I told her she's not allowed in the club with her DSLR, I received the typical response.....she'll be in the next project.

my first contact with MOO re a group discount wasn't that great

I thought I was explaining myself fairly well, they shunted me to their business side

there I explained myself again 30-50 people x 50 postcards x 3-4 times a year and we'd really like a 10 to 25% discount

the response was "yes , we'd give you software, you'd authorize your users, they'd all have separate accounts and only see their own stuff, oh yes, and we'd charge you $300 per year for the software"

I said "wait - if it's $300 per year, that's about $10 per head and somepne, like me, would have to organize and get people to use the software and then each pay me $10 so I could pay you, and while we'd save money if we did more than 1 project a year, the hassle factor is pretty high - how about just a 20% off promotion code ? why do we need special software and management overhead ? and to pay for the honor ?"

basically this is how the business side works - so I'm going to try again and see if I can just get a consumer side promotional rate.

That's my update...

now - last week the other post office accepted my card. nobody ever refused. most places don't look and don't ask for ID.

The idea being if someone steals my card, at least there's a chance that the person will be asked for a driver's license in order to use it.

Not at the Post Office

anyway - the workaround was to use a debit card

post cards will be sent out today

Hi everyone,

I got about half the cards out today, sent first to everyone I had received a card from . Great work all!

I am going out of town and will miss the 1 May deadline, sorry. Cut me some slack, I am making these in the darkroom, takes me most of an evening to make 20!

For those of us who are yet to send out our cards , what should the name be?

It should be Ming-Yue Lee, but autocorrect made it Ming-Hue Lee. Hence my confusion when the first batch of cards came through...

Never simple at the Post Office

so I went to the main Post Office to buy the international stamps

ugly as sin, a moon, looks like dirt

You should sign your card. Under card association rules a card is not valid and must not be accepted until it is signed. Under card association rules merchants are not required to ask for ID even if you write "Check ID" in the signature panel, merchants are supposed to refuse an unsigned card even if you present ID matching the name on the card and merchants are not supposed to refuse a transaction on a signed card even if no ID is presented and it says Check ID under the signature. You're just making it easy for someone to steal your card, sign it themselves and use it. You are also not really protecting yourself from anything. Card association rules are extremely protective of cardholders and you typically have *no* liability for fraudulent transactions.

Merchants are inconsistent about carrying out association rules and so open themselves to risk that they really needn't bear and that's why some merchants will check your ID and allow the transaction even though the card isn't signed. Under association rules, though it is simply not a valid transaction and liability is charged back to the merchant if they accept a card that is not signed. So you aren't eliminating any risk to yourself -- you will not be liable for a fraudulent transaction whether or not you signed the card (and it'll be just as big a pain in the ass to you whether or not you signed the card). You are not making it harder for people to use your stolen card, you're making it easier since they can sign it themselves, and you are throwing risk onto merchants who are doing what you ask them to instead of the merchant banks whose rules they're ignoring when they comply with your request.

Dan, I recieved your card today.
All I can say is that I'll be choosing Matte for the next round, simply beautiful.

Keith ... can you send us the mailing list please (like the past two years)?

From resp #146 above...

For those, like me, who cannot imagine hand-addressing 50 postcards, here's a formatted set of labels. Set up for Avery 5160 labels, or print to paper and affix with tape.

Hello everybody. I went to postbox today to find 16 postcards. So far, all have arrived in great condition. I was wondering how my cards travelled??

This time I just used the local photo print shop. They arranged the image on their thickest sized A0 paper and then just cut them out. Cost 26.59 for 60 cards. They seemed OK quality to me from this end.

In the past I used online postcard print companies. Pay a lot for 50 and they send you as many as 2000 anyway! I am still using the backs of my son's eyes postcards for shopping list from years ago!

Helen, your card arrived here, in the UK, in perfect condition, and is lovely. It was was one of the first to arrive.

I wondered, too, whether the cards I sent arrived in good shape. I used a fairly soft matt paper, so was slightly concerned? I could always say that any postal damage is a part of the art, of course.

We're going to put all the cards in a collage in a big frame in the house. My wife and children love finding them in the post when we get home.

The cards have been great, very enjoyable!

Card conditions: Up here in New England, there is some damage. I want to emphasize that this hasn't affected my enjoyment, but every card here has some markings on the image side. When we're all done, I'll post some examples.

I think this is crummy service from the US Postal service, and it may depend on the age of the local postal sorting machines. Glad to hear that it's better in other locations.

What a very pleasant surprise I've found when I got back here to Raquette Lake to start the '16 summer season!
Haven't been on RFF in something like a year--nothing tragic or anything just some embarrassment for not playing in part 6 and also trying to figure out some personal and professional stuff has led me to put photography in any serious way on a back burner.

Thank you all for the beautiful postcards!

my first contact with MOO re a group discount wasn't that great

That's my update...

...... as a side note. MOO does offer 25% discounts on and off throughout the year. I have taken advantage of it a few times but the timing of the post card project and their discount period do not always line up. I am on their email notification list and have bought some personal business cards and postcards for mailing to family and friends of my images when the discounts are offered.

Just sent my second (and last) batch out, 11 international and 14 domestic.

Someone mentioned 'ugly' stamps - indeed, the domestic stamps are various species of birds, with minimalist design (reminds me of certain shows on the Cartoon Network), and where from a moderate distance it is impossible to judge the orientation of the bird or the stamp. The international stamp is the moon (I guess), from a moderate distance looks like an orange-ish blob.

Not that long ago there was controversy over a stamp of the Statue of Liberty where the 'portrait' turned out to be a stock image not of the monument, but a replica in a Vegas casino.

Of course that doesn't matter here, I am looking forward to the front of your cards, not the stamps...

I finally had some free time to sit and really 'soak up the cards', and its amazing how these images feel in the hands rather than on screen. I'd like to share some of my favourite ones [so far], and how they impact me on a personal level and make me feel how a postcard means more than a paper from 'overseas'.

In no particular order...

1. Robert blu's simple and elegant scene of Italy, kids running, bicycle rolling, sun shining, colours muted perfectly. Brought me back to the calm of Italy (some parts) haha!

2. Seakayaker1's tropical conservatory. It was the written note that made me understand how much the tropical environment meant to Dan. I live in the tropics (Singapore), and trust me, its hot. We b**** about the heat, daily. The sun literally burns (34'C) us from 1000hr - 1700hr daily. I guess it made me realise how uncomfortable others are in the freezing winters, sometimes for most durations of the year. If you intend to visit Singapore, drop me a note!

3. P3tr's very well composed image of the seagull soaring with the landscape behind. What many may say its a 'tourist shot', but on closer look, its such an elegant image where the birds seem so well placed. Just the right amount of 'grain' too.

4. pbo's intimate image of a kitchen. Yes, many may say 'its a kitchen'. What many may fail to understand is that not everyone is as fortunate as I, or us. That simple kitchen may feed 5, or even 12, you'd never know. That same kitchen may not have the electricity to power a gas stove, yet alone provide hot water with a push of a button. And that light bulb, awesome!

Another strange thing is that I was wondering why everyone wrote my address as "bulk". It was so funny to see and image what you guys think of Singapore which as such a strange address system....

Its a spelling error in the main address list....its meant to be BLK (as in Block). Just something very funny where I imagine my postal service to think you guys queer to call us BULK.

Oh yes, I love the stamps from Italy and Japan!
Great project guys!

Oops... that is entirely on me. The spell checker has "corrected" several names and addresses and I fixed it when I caught it, but I missed that one. My apologies.
