Hi all,

Time for the latest edition of RFF's fabled (:p) Print Swap Series: v18! Here's a chance for you to get your picture hanging on someone else's wall, and to get a brand-new print all your own.

If you've never participated, welcome! I hope that you enjoy yourself here. If you've participated before, welcome back. The rules are mostly the same but please note especially the changes to duration and deadlines. If you have any questions do not hesitate to ask me.

RFF Print Swap 18

Theme

There are no restrictions on subject matter. Let your creativity run wild.
There are no restrictions on print medium. However, in the interests of archival integrity, silver-halide prints (for B&W) or inkjet prints (for color) are recommended. If you have a preference for a certain style of print please discuss that with your partner.

Procedure

Sign-ups will be open for 14 days. After sign-ups are closed I'll partner partners by drawing names out of a hat. The list will be posted here and emailed to all participants. (Each participant will be partnered with, and swap prints with, one other participant. If there are an odd number of applicants, I will join so that we become an even number of participants.)
It is up to each participant to contact his/her partner and arrange shipping details.
Prints should be around A4 size (810 inches or 210297 mm). Feel free to package them however you would like, e.g. matted or otherwise.
Aim to have your print printed, packaged, and mailed within 4 weeks of the participant list being posted.
When you have received your print, let us know about your experiences. Feel free to post a picture of the print to the thread!
To sign up, PM or email me (erikhaugsby AT gmail DOT com) with the following data. Please use the phrase "Print Swap 18" in the subject line.

Would love to be a part. About time I actually share some photos with people rather then thinking they are not worthy. Gets a little intimidating around here sometimes.

Please contact your partner directly. If you have difficulties contacting him just send me a message and I'll help where I can.

It would be nice to have your print sent out by 30 July (four weeks from today). I think this should be sufficient time but let me know if anything comes up for you.

When you send out your print, or receive your partner's print, go ahead and post something to the thread. It'd be great to see your feedback/feelings.

Have fun!

I mailed off my print yesterday and confirmed with my print-partner (perzpective (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/member.php?u=56103) aka Zack) that he dispatched his print towards me at roughly the same time. A chance to compare our respective national postal services at the same time!

A most worthwhile exercise, which I used as an opportunity to work on (and I hope improve) some of my printing techniques.

Thanks, Erik, for organising this.

As I predicted to Zack, Korea Post outdid poor old Aussie Post by what I'm guessing will be a fair margin (though I hope not as bad a defeat as England handed us in the cricket).

The print Zack sent me (a very nice B&W landscape photo, well printed and presented - and a tad larger than strictly required by the print swap arrangements) arrived today. I hope the print I sent Zack arrives in due course, without fuss.

Im enjoying the process of the print swap but i better get a move on. Its the first time ive taken part in something like this and my partner Thanimal mentioned something that realy got me thinking.

Selecting an image that has artistic value to people other then yourself.

Makes the decision harder but more meaningful and i guess its a good question to ask ourself with all our images. Anyway thats just something i have learnt in the process which is why i joined in on this.
Now to get back to getting my image printed and packaged.

Actually i need some guidance from you guys.

Im getting an B&W inkjet print print done this afternoon. In the past i have only ever dont the loacal print shop quick printing since it is for my own use.
Another print shop that specializes in fine art prints has a choice of cotton rag art papers, pearl/lustre and premium gloss photographic papers. My intention is to go for cotton rag papper but i have never printed on it. Would this be the best choice and anything i should be looking out for?

The print I sent (http://www.flickr.com/photos/mfunnell/9364707374/) for my swap was on Innova Smooth Cotton, which is that type of paper.

One option would be for you to get an ICC profile from your print service showing the characteristics of the paper/inkset/printer combination they're using. You could then soft-proof against that profile and adjust your image file so it comes out "just so" (or close to it) when they print from your adjusted file.

However, if all that sounds like Greek (or what ever language you can't speak) then perhaps you could supply then with a smaller print that's close to what you're after and ask them to match that with the larger print. However, from what you've said you might not be in a position to do that so perhaps your best bet would be to have them print smaller sample prints on different media then select from those for a larger final print.

We both seem to be in the same boat with a slight lack of self-confidence in our artistic abilities. When thinking about how others will perceive our images, it is good to remember that we will always see all sorts of flaws which nobody else will ever notice. In other words, don't sweat it! (Not too much, anyway.)

Certainly good advice there that i had not considered. And i have actually narrowed my selection down to 3 options and with your advice i might get the 3 of them done on different papers in samples just as a learning excercise for future reference.

Thanimal,
At this rate i should have my print ready to send in a few days.

Hope everyone is enjoying this exercise as much as i have.

Made my decision last night.
Had it narrowed down to two images and decision was made when i couldn't find the negative to re scan one of them :bang:

Went to the print shop to discus printing them and had a choice of 4 papers. Was expensive so i picked two papers to test and pick them up tomorrow and my print should be in the mail in 2 days. :)

Chris, sorry for the delay, I had mine ready to go yesterday and the post office was closed when I got there! I will get it out Monday.

Helllish hot the first half of last month, even my basement was a swamp - only get back to using the darkroom last week.

Received a beautiful image from the Dover coast from Chris Brainwood today, great black and white photo. Luckily, I was able to get my print off to him at the same time, so I am not a total laggard .

This is a good idea, we should keep it going . Thanks to Erik for making it happen.

Received a tube from Mike a few days ago with three beautiful landscapes. I have had the opportunity to place them in clear sleeves to flatten them.

One photograph being an evening view across the quarry located next to the 'Coldstone Cut (http://thecoldstonescut.org/index.php?p=home)' public art work.

The other two being winter evening views taken while walking about the Fewston Reservoir.

Thank You Mike for your generosity!

I received my print yesterday from Thanimal. I think i got lucky being parried up with him as i received a lovely print of a coastal scenes from an area of the world i have always wanted to visit. Its found a place in my office on my bookshelf until i find a nice frame to hang it on my wall.

I chose to send a print from my first roll of film that i successfully processed and an image i used in another RFF project about 5 images with a common theme. It was an image that was really the turning point in my photography and when i decided "i can actually do this". I printed at my local lab with B&W pigment inks on cotton rag papper and was blown away in the difference from the general camera store to a professional print can achieve.

Really have enjoyed the process and i think anyone who hasn't had a go at one of these projects should. Its a chance to learn a lot and you get something in return.

Thanks to Erik again for making it happen.
Now to think about joining in the next postcard project.

I received a beautiful print from mrtoml a few weeks ago (sorry for the delay in my post).

It's a lith print, and apparently that is one of his specialties. Very nice photo of woodland flora. Monochrome, but it sort of reminds me of Eliot Porter's nature photos.

My photo was a shot of the Stoneleigh Hotel in Dallas. The details:

Shot on Rolleiflex w/ 75mm f/3.5 Tessar using Ilford Delta 100. 1/30 sec. at f/3.5. Developed in D-76 1+1 for 11 minutes at 20C. Printed with Omega B-22 enlarger, using EL-Nikkor 75mm f/4. Dektol developer. Ilford MGIV RC 8x10 inch paper. Exposed at contrast 3 f/16 for 3 seconds.

Overall, a very satisfying print swap experience (my third). Thanks to Erik for organizing.
