View Full Version : W/NW: A Year on Film with 50mm lenses

First day of spring, good time to start a new project. Helps with GAS, too. :)

I have picked twelve of my 50mm lenses (35mm format). Over the next year, I will try to get keepers using all of them, and share here. Most of them are Leica mount, some SLR lenses will be included too.

If you take any interesting 50mm shots, feel free to share here as well. Please do include lens and film info. If you want to add a picture of camera and lens in addition to the picture taken with the lens, that's OK, too. Hopefully this will grow into a nice long thread documenting the versatility of the 50mm focal length.

No pictures yet, as I'm starting this week-end. The purpose of this first post is just to put a stake in the ground.

Roland.

Roland - out of curiosity, could yo list the 50mm lenses that you plan to use?

I'm in as well, using a ZM Planar, a Nikon 50/1.8 AIS Pancake and a Nikon 50/1.4 AFS-G... plus other 50's that I plan to pick up along the way. :D

Nice, Keith ! I'll suprise you with the choice over time, if you don't mind :)

I know, it's hard to believe that I have more than 12 :o And it's not even my favorite focal length. As good as any reason for this project ....

1. Heliar 50/3.5
2. Heliar 50/2
3. Nikon 50/2 ltm
4. Canon 50/1.2
5. Canon 50/1.4
6. Canon 50/1.5

This is getting scary! I don't know what I have in 50mm beyond what is listed above, but what I have is sufficient.

Sounds like a great project, Roland, and I'm in. In fact, I'll try to post some "early spring" shots once Roland posts a few of his. (One of my 50s is back from the hospital -- I dropped it last summer -- and I finally got around to testing it.)

And I will be sure to post some photos taken with a lens that Roland may recognize. :)

If we each pick one or two lenses, and then take carefully some photos, then this may work actually better than zipping through 20 lenses.

10 RFs and 12SLRs so I have a ways to go to reach the Raid level. I'm definitely in, however. Even with this handicap.

Although I "only" have 5 50s in RF (currently), I may whittle my selection for this project down to three: two "vintage" lenses with different characteristics, and a modern lens: Uncoated Summitar; Canon 50/1.5; CV Skopar 50/2.5.

This project may also be an excuse to put a Minolta MD Rokkor 50/1.4 (an impulse buy last year for my Minolta XD-11) through its paces, if SLRs are allowed.

A wonderful idea Roland - thanks for sharing it with us and inviting us to participate. This may inspire me to take out the Pentax with the 50/1.2, and perhaps contrast it with the (more) modern 43/1.9. Is it your preference to keep this amongst the film users?

These are great, Gblader, thanks for sharing. Particularly like #2. Beautiful model, too. Haven't visited Korea for a couple of years, these make me want to go back.

Excited that all you guys are willing to participate. Chris, I'm looking forward to 50/1.2 and 43mm shots - have not seen "real-life" photos taken by either from somebody whose photography I know a bit and appreciate. I personally will use film, but don't mind if you guys use digital, as long as you say so. Would prefer FF however, to keep the focal length around 50mm and see the various lenses perform on the format they were designed for.

Tony, if you ever want to take one of my 50s for a spin, let me know :)

---

I'll start simple myself, with an OM Zuiko 50/1.8. I'll take it out tomorrow on an OM2 loaded with Ektar. This morning it was used with TMY to take "product shots" of my lens picks (minus 2, the Zuiko 50/1.8 obviously, and a lens that is currently taking a bath at Sherry's).

Roland.

These were all shot with a circa 1952 Voigtlander Prominent-mount 50mm f/3.5 Color-Skopar. It's a tiny, coated, nickel-plated thing. An MS Optical Prominent-to-M39 coupled adapter and a Leica M39-to-M behind that made it work on my Zeiss Ikon ZM. Was shocked to find a correct 45mm-threaded aftermarket round hood for it on eBay.

Film was Tri-X. I think these were all taken at f/5.6.

The lens and its body have been in the family for years, but the body stopped worked properly in the nineties, so the lens sat mothballed until I got the MS-PRO adapter this winter. Have taken three rolls with this lash-up, and I'm generally pleased with the rendering and the bokeh. Fifteen-bladed iris.

I've recently started a project exploring suburbia in Sunnyvale, CA (in "Silicon Valley"), which includes some photos of remnants of the farms and ranches that gave way to housing tracks after World War II. These four photos are from one such remnant, an apricot orchard and fruit drying plant. They were taken with a CV Skopar 50/2.5 on a Leica IIIc, on Tri-X @ iso 800 using a yellow filter, and developed in Diafine:

Disclaimer: don't expect too much "art" from my photography, I usually count on a handful of real keepers per year, and much of what I shoot might be totally boring to most. While nothing special, I wanted to share some photos of my first project roll (Ektar) anyways, just to show that I got started:

Calypso Orchid

http://ferider.smugmug.com/Picture-a-Week/2013/0313-B/i-2r9sKT8/0/XL/scan017-XL.jpg

We hiked 5 hours last Sun to proudly see 3 of those. This orchid is rare, blooms 2 weeks out of the year, and has a special role in the history of our national and Californian state parks (see, for instance, http://www.yosemite.ca.us/john_muir_writings/calypso_borealis_by_muir.html).

Paul, always nice to see SMC pictures .... I'm new to HC110. How do you develop in (H) ?

03-28-2013, 07:28
thanks, roland.
H is 1+63, which i mix as one-shot per roll. usual time is 10 minutes, 30 seconds plus or minus depending on temp. i never go below 68F, nor above 72F.
i use the paterson one-reel tank, with swirly stick. 10-second gentle swirly to start, then 5-second gentle swirly on the minute. gentle is the way to be. seems to help keep highlights, rather than blow them. i tend to expose toward highlights anyhow ...

Is the project concept to shoot ONLY 50s for the year?

I just bought an M4-P -- my first film experience in over ten years -- but got a 35 for it. The project sounds so appealing that I'm shopping around for a low cost 50.

John

No John, I will occasionally use other focal lengths when needed. For me, the project is to get keepers with twelve 50mm lenses (well, 40-60, as said above).

Cheers,

Roland.

John, those are wonderful Ektar images. Is that your typical way of shooting BW? I'm revisiting BW film after many years of digital only, but am missing the flexibility of color channels.

John

Hi John - thank you. At the moment colour to mono is what I am doing because I have not yet set myself up for home processing. Ektar really is an emulsion that I should let shine in its natural state - colour - but I'm not too confident that I'm scanning to achieve a representative look yet, so the conversions are occurring in LR. Also, the light was often not ideal from these as the shots were family holiday constrained ;).

Can I also recommend your website in your signature to all on RFF - I will be visiting often with the time set aside to contemplate your most inspiring body of work, art and thought - thank you.

I only have two 50s. One's a V2 Summilux. The other, which took the pictures below, almost never comes up in conversation here.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v249/Seaslug/purgativepoetry_zps49dc7f7c.jpg

I gotta tell ya, these images look great; quite characterful. I think you have a rather special lens here. I am glad you were able to rescue it.

05-28-2013, 20:38
I listed over 25 50mm lenses, so I removed the long list. In fact, I may limit my contribution to this lens only.

25 lenses ? wow!

Just came back from 10 days in Tanzania (see also http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=134098). For the trip, I continued to use the Nikkor 50/1.8, together with my 50/1.4 Summilux v2.

but personally I love the 50/2 more. sharpness and close focus are one thing, but I think the Zuiko macros are the OM lenses that have the most in common with Zeiss' SLR lenses, which I happen to be a big fan of:

Ive abandoned my poor 50/3.5 lately though, it does the same thing, though even more. it's just slow and I've had new toys. I should bring it out and do some shots with it. at least this one is 2013:
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7345/8807366878_2ac238bab7_b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pmcmanis/8807366878/)
Untitled (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pmcmanis/8807366878/) by redisburning (http://www.flickr.com/people/pmcmanis/), on Flickr

and there is always the 50MP, which is a monster. both in size and performance; and since I shoot b&w it's only real weakness (LoCA) doesnt even matter.
http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3705/9593107587_96f5c7a5c1_b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pmcmanis/9593107587/)
Untitled (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pmcmanis/9593107587/) by redisburning (http://www.flickr.com/people/pmcmanis/), on Flickr

and there are always more ~50mm options in the queue.

Roland, the 50/1.4 really handled Shark Fin well. I haven't used mine much recently, frankly it's not really "my" lens in the way the macros are.

Thanks, RIB. Really like the photo of the gate.

This is a pristine coated Summitar which surprised me by giving no flare while shooting into a very bright backlit fountain. Tri-X at 400 (I think) in HC110 dil H for 10 min, 75F ( a little too dense for my taste). Shadows to higlights showed remarkable detail. Don't think I could ever have done this range with digital, but please correct me if I'm wrong!

it may be a new year guys but we still have nearly 4 months left. let's get a status update, please! what 50mm lenses do you intend to use, or acquire, for your year on film with a 50?

newest addition: Olympus 50/1.2
50 I want most: E55 Summicron (ok fine 55 distagon but it's not actually a 50 lmao)
50 Ive used the most so far this year: ZM 50 Planar
50 I will endeavor to use more for the remainder of the year: Olympus 50/3.5

2013 was the year I came "back" to the Canon 50/1.5 (the one I got from Roland a few years ago) after not having shot much with it for awhile. After using other 50s, I think the Canon sonnar may become more of a regular go-to 50, particularly on my M2 and Canon L1. Here are some recent samples:

Nice shots with the Elmar 50/2.8 LTM, Roland! Funny thing, I was out on Friday taking photos of Elephant Seals at Point Reyes; it's pupping season. Your Elmar photos inspired me to reach into the archives and pull out a color photo taken with an Elmar 50/2.8 LTM at the Point Reyes Lighthouse a few years ago, and one from last Friday taken with my Elmar 50/3.5 LTM:

There's a lot of opinion in England that these are a blot on the landscape. I differ from that opinion.

Excellent shot. Framing from within a frame sets the picture up nicely.

The large depth of field helps too. The whole frame in focus composes the view. The collection of turbines to the right where the hill rises up are wonderful. I think I'll save this one and keep coming back to it.

Ok I know mods read this thread why is this post still here?

Not sure if this counts here, was taken with an EPL1 with Vivitar 28 Komine lens @2.8 (effective 56mm)

like I wasn't gonna call him out on it (and it's still a mod issue more than an ampguy issue), but the title of the thread is 50mm lenses on film, not "almost maybe in some other world 50mm lenses on definitely not film".

@ampguy I dont know why you posted that (you even said you didnt think it belonged here...) but I don't have an issue with you doing it. it doesnt belong but it's on the mods to fix that and not you.

Thought I'd share another taken earlier this year - actually day after New Years - which shows rendition of a wartime (uncoated) Summitar. Other than the odd aperture values and non-stops this thing is bursting with character.

I am really surprised by the Canon 50/1.2. When I tried it years ago, I really didn't like it. I got another copy for this project, since it's one of the very few front-extended Planars still available. Coming back from a business trip where I almost exclusively used it, I really like the results. Lot's of character wide open, but generally usable stopped down. Seems to have less distortion than, for instance, Summilux v2 (or the Canon 50/1.4 LTM, for that matter).

Here are some samples (all on TMY developed with HC110(B)):
