View Full Version : Seven Rolls in Seven Days ... THE RULES.

Keith
06-19-2012, 03:02
Official start date is 1st July 2012 and the challenge ends on the 28th July 2012.

During this twenty eight day period you must shoot a roll of film (or the LF equivalent) per day for seven consecutive days. You can start on day one (1st) or you can start on the 21st which will be the latest you can leave it and still allow sufficient time to be completed by the 28th. There is no flexibility in this schedule for late starters and if you miss a day in your chosen seven day period you have FAILED ... this is not negotiable!

You may use any (film) camera/cameras you desire and you are free to switch a film from one camera to another if you choose to do so on any given day of the seven ... this will cover you for the unlikely event of a camera failure!

Film speed, emulsion etc is up to you and you can use a different type of film for each of the seven days if you choose ... and that includes being able to mix formats if you wish.

Format is up to you and these are the available options:

120/220 ... as 6x4.5 ~ 6x6 ~ 6x7 ~ 6x9 and wider if you have the appropriate camera.

135 ... as 24 x 36 ~ X-pan, Widelux etc and half frame if you're a masochist. (in this format of film a roll can be 24 or 36 exposure)

Large format (sheet film) ... two sheets per day. If you're going to lug one of these things around for a week you deserve a break!

I will start another thread on the eve of the 1st July to officially launch the challenge!

On the 1st August I will start a thread where people will be able to post their three best images from their seven days and relate their experiences. We want to hear about the hardships, the mishaps and the successes of your personal challenge and what you feel you gained from it. Obviously the thread will be on going for some time as people develop and scan etc before they can actually post images.

Is it necessary to do 7 rolls in 7 days? If yes, how do we validate? I can choose my 3 best shots from 1 roll shot during this period?

Sounds ok, will be in Bali from 20.July just enough time in the first week of my anual, if the Bintang is not getting in the way.;)

Keith
06-19-2012, 04:37
I don't read anything saying that the three best shots can or can't come from just one roll. My take is obviously they can if that is the case.

The concept is to hit the streets, the studio, the cityscape or landscape and shoot one roll of film per day for seven consecutive days. The effort is the point of the endeavor.

There is no contest committee, exif data won't be checked on RAW files for excessive manipulation. Think of it as the honor system.

Yes .. yes and yes! :D

Mulling this over ... two sheets of 4x5 per day, even with working full time it might be possible! And it's a bit of a cheat since my 4x5 is lighter than many MF cameras, but hey, I didn't make the rules!

Hi Keith, I'm in.

Say, I was thinking this would be more interesting if there were a little prize for the best image. Perhaps you could offer a '72 Fleetwood, with the 7.7 liter V-8, dual comfort seats, sunroof with Eldorado Coupe Custom Cabriolet treatment, AM/FM radio with tape, full climate control and white wall tires. Just thinkin' out loud here.

:-)

I'm seriously looking forward to the August thread. After a roll a day for a week there should be some very fine images resulting.

Thanks!

Keith, I am in. However , I would suggest that we post up to seven shots , best one from each roll (fewer if one or more rolls gets messed up).

It is your challenge , ultimately you decide,

You are asking for the impossible keith.:D I belong to a group on flickr that you have to shoot a whole roll on a certain day & post every image good or bad from the whole roll. That's not easy & now this! Sounds fun. Seems you could allow digital shooters in & just set a minimum of 24 shots per day from their card for 7 days. Anyhow I may give it a go but as of late my job has really become hectic.:( Here is a link to the flickr group if any of you are interested.

Pack film count?

10 sheets in the pack. Not that I can afford 7 packs in seven days, but may one or two out of the seven?

Good idea though. I have trouble getting through a roll a week ;)

I have pulled 10 rolls of ACROS from the freezer for this. Three rolls will be shot in advance to test camera and developer and then on July 1st I am on board. Kind of scary - one camera, one lens (this is my own self-imposed rule) and one roll AND no extra film along. Cold sweat forming already.

I think I'm in too.

The question is do I choose seven days encompassing this www.rencontre-arles.com (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/www.rencontres-arles.com/A11/C.aspx?VP3=CMS3&VF=ARL_782_VForm&SrvRsp=1&LANGSWI=1&LANG=English) or this www.4daagse.nl (http://www.4daagse.nl/en.html) -- or possibly somewhere in between . . .

If I can check the focus in time, I'll try using a folding Agfa 6x6 camera (which is nice and light, ideal for walking the 200km).

I decided to make it a fleet exercise so, seven different films, seven different cameras, seven different lenses in the seven days. I am struggling to pull seven developers off the shelf though. Looks like I may go for one developer so HC110/D76/Rodinal (probably stand) but these are diverse emulsions, any thoughts?

Films are:

Rollei Retro 400S
Agfa APX 100
Kodak Tri-X
Kodak T-Max 400
Eastman Kodak 5422/Double XX
Fuji Acros 100
Ilford HP5 Plus

Cameras chosen for age range with roughly contemporary lenses:

Leica M2 Rapidwinder Summilux 50mm f1.4
Leica M6 Rapidwinder Summicrom 35mm f2 (IV)
Ilford Advocate Dallmeyer 35mm f3.5
Alpa Reflex Mod.7 Kern Switar f1.8 (so that's 3 rangefinders)
Nikon F2 Plain prism Black 35mm f2 Nikkor O (Pre AI)
Nikon F4 35-70mm AFD f2.8
Nikon F100 Nikkor AFD 50mm f1.8

Even better most have films in to finish of first, good job you can start the week anytime. Looking forward to it.

Now that's a nice pile of equipment! Should be a fun week for you mixing everything together.

My plan is to stick with my rangefinder (Zeiss Ikon) and maybe just one lens. Not sure about the film, but I might limit myself to just one so the seven days has a consistent feel.

Other than the Leicas very inexpensive these days as a bonus.

But I get to fret over which camera with which film each day :D

I'm going to try to vary the film format a bit day to day to keep it interesting. I'm planning on shooting 35mm, 120, 110 & APS. Too bad I don't have a working Polaroid or some 828 film for my Bantam Special! I wonder if anyone is breaking out a Minox?

This will be a hard challenge for me--some days I shoot multiple rolls, and other days barely a frame or two--but I think that's all the more reason to give it a try. It will force me to shoot on days when I may not ordinarily do so. I'm in.

I keep thinking about whether I should try to theme-up a little, keep it random as I usually do, or go the other way and try to work outside my comfort zone - ie go up to strangers in the street and ask to take their picture. The temptation to go for the latter is strong - though I know the quality of the product would suffer. But it seems maybe thats the point?

There is no contest committee, exif data won't be checked on RAW files for excessive manipulation.
That brings up a question. Since the film or prints will have to be scanned to upload, then what is allowed in the way of manipulation? I have been known to "remove" items from a file (including scanned negs). Usually it is dust from scanned film, but could include something that takes away from the photo, but could not be worked around in the composition.

Can we use any tools/techniques from modern photo software or limited what we can be done in the darkroom (or digital equivalent)?

johannielscom
07-01-2012, 07:16
Since it's not a contest I suppose anyone can proceed as desired and we can let common sense and general good taste decide after upload.

Kind of a 'bring your own ethics' picnic... :D
