This is in historic Gore Hill Cemetery close to the heart of Sydney. The first body was interred in 1877; most burials were between 1900 and 1930. In all 14,456 people were interred here until the cemetery closed in 1974.
The saddest part of the cemetery are the avenues of children's graves, like this one. Scarlet fever and smallpox epidemics, as well as tuberculosis, accounted for many infant deaths.
While photographing here I came across a homeless man, living amongst the dead. It's a quiet and beautiful place, just a stone's throw from a major hospital on one side and a highway on the other.
