I hate this word...

Analog

When did my Nikon F2a become an "Analog" camera ???
When did I switch to shooting "Analog" pictures ???
Why did my choice of shooting have to change it's name ???
My Nikon, Mamiya, Olympus, Pentax, Minolta or Yashica Mat are and forever will be "Film" cameras or simply just plain "Cameras"...if you want to call your M9 a "Digital" camera that's fine with me just DON'T go converting my "Film" cameras to "Analog"...

Sorry, but that's been bugging me for a while...

What new terminology is getting you hot under the collar ???

The word 'bokeh' and its improper use of another way of saying out of focus areas. Bokeh refers to the quality of those out of focus areas, not the areas themselves.

It also bothers me when people take pictures of themselves with their camera, usually via mirror.

I never heard of "Soup" until I read it here and what's up with "Wet" printing...

In this context, it's not even as though analogue was spelt correctly either . . .

Another one of mine is: I just bought a Leica MP and now I need a lens. I'm thinking of getting [enter lens that is below par].

Translation, I just sold the house to buy this dream camera I will hardly ever use. Since I don't know that the technical qualities of the images depends more on the quality of the glass in my lens than it has to do with the body, I spent almost everything on the camera body.

There's been a lot of angst about "analogue" on this and other forums recently. Even (incorrect, I feel comfortable saying) claims that the word is being misapplied. Personally, I don't really understand the pique. It's not a personal judgement. It's just a useful descriptor in this day and age when such items have become a very decided minority. If we all drove electric cars, we'd talk about "gas cars".

Personally I just say "film" because it's shorter and I'm lazy but I don't see get bent out of shape about it.

I don't mind it at all because it's appropriate. And guess what? Life is analog. Any digital process is missing information.

So how do you feel about APUG?

In this case, I smile and say "sure!" I then let them look at the back of my Leica/FED/Mamiya.... They look at the camera and then back at me, confused. This is especially true to my nieces and nephews, who's parents only use digital for snapshots.

Analogue doesn't really bother me although I don't call my film cameras that way.

One time someone thought my camera was digital and tried to see the "picture I just took", thinking the film label holder on the back was an LCD screen. I told him it's not digital and that's not an LCD. He said "that's cool. it's like a fake dslr!" WTF!

Words I hate:
First question about the camera I carry is "How many mega pixels?"
Calling any camera with proportionally large lens "SLR"
Calling any retro looking camera "rangefinder"
Calling a huge dent "a little nick"

"Nice tones"
"Pleasing composition"

"Cleaning marks" is a good one.

Does anyone really ask, "Is that digital"? It seems to me, if they don't know cameras, they probably figure everything is digital. If they do know cameras, they know.

Cheers,
Gary

film cameras have always been analog. It's just that nobody bothered to point it out before. It's just a word...

I think this is the last generation/era people ask that question because pretty much all adults/college student generation have seen film camera as well as digital. The next generation will indeed think all cameras are digital, and won't even ask that question. They won't even have concept of analogue or film. (Or even "digital" for that matter.)

I put an old color picture of my son in the film label holder of my Nikon F2a and when people ask if it's a digital camera I say "Yup" and show them the picture...

Now I'm tempted to replace the film holder on my ME with a mini LCD that can play a slideshow of Queen Elizabeth's coronation or something.

Hehe. For one weekend, I'll make my kitty pic with some digital camera like interface on top, put that in the label holder, then put a red dot saying Leica in Katakana on my OM. I'll shoot around a hipster central and see what kind of comments I can get.

Mike,

+1 "Sharp."
