Digital Leica M8 / M8.2 / M9 / M-E /Mono / M10 aka "M" Discussions about the Leica M8 /M 8.2 / M9 / M9-P/ M-E / M Monochrom / M10 aka "M": Leica digital M mount rangefinder cameras. Naming the new digital M the "Leica M" is VERY unfortunate as it will only confuse newbies with other Leica M cameras of the the past. Happily there is room for confusion with only the past 59 years of Leica M production ... since Leica introduced the Leica M system in 1953. All Hail for the Leica Marketing Department learning Leica M history!

Digital M8?

I have been using an M2 with 15/21/35/50/90 lenses for the past couple years and added an X100 last year. During a recent trip to Asia, I took only the X100 and loved the technology and simplicity. However, I feel guilty about having all those M lenses and not giving them much use.

Photography has been a hobby since the early 1970's and I have owned various systems. I have resisted digital only because I don't care much for computers but a digital M is tempting. I can afford an M9 but don't really want to put that much money into a hobby so am thinking about an M8.

I know about the 1.3 crop factor and thinking an M8 with 15/35/90 lenses might make a great travel kit. So the question is how well does the 15 work on the M8? And has anyone had any problems with the 35f1.2? Do you think the M8 is still worth the purchase? I looked at one two years ago and was disappointed with the noise but I guess there are post processing software which helps with that problem. Thanks, Rich

Well, if owning all those M lenses and not using them is creating guilt, you could get rid of them.

Don't eliminate the possibility of a Sony Nex - the 7 or the 5n with EVF. I use them with M lenses all the time and the results are spectacular. Very easy to use cameras too, one you learn the layout.

I bought my M8 because my Leica lenses were gathering dust.

The crop factor is no big deal. You adjust.

One thing to consider is getting the lenses coded. A lot of folks don't bother coding their lenses and they still take perfectly fine photos. There's a lot to read about coding so check into it.
