Gallery Picks ... for the week ending Monday 21st May 2012

Gallery Picks is an opportunity for you to post a heads up to what you have seen during the past seven days at RFF that you like.
There's no membership requirement, no criteria (except past seven days), no voting, no limit to the number of photos mentioned, and everybody mentioned is a winner.

Anybody can start the thread on a Monday.

Anybody can join in, it's a community event!

thank you Keith, Tony Pio, Luigi, and j.scooter for the mentions.

So many interesting and excellent photos in the gallery this week! I apologise in advance for the large number of picks.

Arvay - Lena. Beautiful and mystical, like a fairy in the forest.

Keith - *****. So obviously a photo by Keith. The light is soft and beautiful. As Adam said, a little dreamy, a little sexy...

Ezzie - Oslofjord. The luminous quality of the light caught my attention, also the composition. Being by Ezzie I assumed it was caffenol - then I noticed it was taken with an iPhone4. The tonal subtlety took me by surprise!

Harry Caul - 1st airplane sighting. Gorgeously rendered child and beautiful tonal and focus separation with the summilux. Transports us to the wonder in a small child's life. This is Harry's first upload, and I'm really looking forward to more!

Doomster - Martin. What an expression, and what a portrait!

seanbonner - June 2012. Another powerful portrait, beautifully rendered.

dotur - tradition revived. Such a powerful image, well framed and timed with the girl running in front appearing to be sick. Reminds me of reportage photography in the heydays of Life magazine.

another one from dotur: Joy. The sheer happiness, lightness and joy of being radiating out of this picture is a delight!

Children, yet another fascinating photo from dotur. Ivan posted so many good images this week! This glimpse into the lives of children in Van (Turkey) reveals individual personalities, while the background provides context.

dotur - want me to crop? Gosh Ivan, you've lifted the bar in selfies so high I give up!

Alex Krasotkin - March in the Donskoy Monastery. Poignant, with Alex's usual beautifully controlled tonality.

some more...

Carole Dame - Tiger Leap Gorge. Impressive spectacle from an excellent vantage point. The figures on the other side lend scale.

Luiman - Wiremore_01. The graphic quality of this leapt out from the thumbnails. Lovely texture. The wires add the finishing touch.

print44 - IMG1648. Another graphically powerful deep-blacks image in this week's gallery. I liked the light on the wet pavers, and the shadow of the pole balancing out the twin white lines.

mto'brien - Gettysburg I. I thought central placement of General Warren's figure at The Devil's Den works very well here. The tonal rendition of the landscape and clouds is deceptively beautiful, in contrast to the bloody battleground of 1863.

Jhutchins - Annie_swings_it. Annie is obviously having a great time and I thought this photo captures both her and the mood very well.

Bingley - Near Dixon. This looked to me like a universal photo of places that get passed by, where nothing much happens, but I see it's just outside of Sacramento. I liked the laid back mood and thoughtful composition - also the tonality.

StefanJozef - hal2. Excellent action shot. Love that curve of riders.

enlo - passing by. Beautiful light, framing, capture.

porktaco - birthday 4. I thought this was a very feminine and sensual candid.

Frank Version Two - Mary. Lovely, well humoured photo of the young-at-heart (she's 93).

gho - R419-120520-5. Quite disturbing. Particularly after having just watched a documentary on Maddy McCann.

Astro8 - black v2. I thought this was stylish. I like the contrast between the stockings and carpet.

A real pleasure to take part in this thread - even if it's not as frequently as I'd like. Some excellent work and I'm sure my selection has missed many good pictures.

Thanks to j.scooter and lynnb for selecting one of mine - it's always a pleasure to be included in the Monday Picks

astro8

Alex Krasotkin - another image which seems to come straight from the forties

Keith - I love the tones and the sense of a secret place

Crazy Fedya

lynnb another fabulous image

Keith - couldn't resist this shot as I used to work as a loco fireman...

thanks j.scooter, james and print44.

i'm noticing the pictures i missed this week, by only looking at thumbnails and looking rather quickly. as much as i try not to complain about the state of our beloved forum's website, i do wish we had some kind of rollover-or-click-and-see-it-big-sized feature.

here's two that i missed

now, for the ones i didn't....

arvay. ok, so it's posed. but it's dreamy and beautiful and the shapes of the trees in the back and their textures go so well with her dress.

merelvok. also midtonal and dreamy. very intimate.

huntjump. he looks as relaxed as could be. i would be clutching the concrete. great photo.

dotur. my photo of the week. full of emotion, glorious extension and perfectly titled. plus, she's way up high on something scary and doesn't seem to care.

enlo. great timing and construction. pretty contre-jour and patterns.

crazy fedya. similar reasons. very well constructed.

andy v. i really like her white shoes and the tone on her legs. and the way she levitates. and the strong lines.
