Digital Leica M8 / M8.2 / M9 / M-E /Mono / M10 aka "M" Discussions about the Leica M8 /M 8.2 / M9 / M9-P/ M-E / M Monochrom / M10 aka "M": Leica digital M mount rangefinder cameras. Naming the new digital M the "Leica M" is VERY unfortunate as it will only confuse newbies with other Leica M cameras of the the past. Happily there is room for confusion with only the past 59 years of Leica M production ... since Leica introduced the Leica M system in 1953. All Hail for the Leica Marketing Department learning Leica M history!

if you found a 5K lottery ticket ...

Dear RF forum shooters ...

The RD-1 was recently sold .... I'm missing it a bit already.

So, lets say you hit the lottery for 5K!

Assuming you have NO RF CAMERA at this point:

Get an M8 + 35mm Leica lens ( or maybe a 25/40 cv pair)
Get an M9 and find the money for a lens
Sorry, gave up on RF for a reason, get a D800 or
just go on a trip!

I would pack up my X100 and X-Pro 1 and head out on a trip. I'd return home after I spent 4K of the winnings.

I'd spend the other 1K on lab prints and framing.

If I were limited by the choices you offer, I'd say M9 and start looking for another 5K lottery ticket.

If not, ZI, 50mm Sonnar, 35mm Nokton, and Epson 700 scanner. I would also add a Contax Zeiss 21mm for my Contax G.

I thought you were going to spend it on the 50/2 ASPH.

Go on a trip. Find an inexpensive digi-PS and just have fun.

If I were being responsible, I'd put the 5k toward tuition at my school for next year (40k a year for tuition alone!)

If I were being less responsible but still reasonable, I'd use the 5k to either spend a few weeks or a month in Namibia to do a documentary, or walk the Camino de Santiago de Compostela, again for a documentary/photobook.

If I were being the least responsible (but still pretty darn reasonable), I'd get an M6 TTL .85x, the ZM 50mm f/1.5, and perhaps get the Contax G 90mm lens converted to M mount. Or get a decent 35mm lens.

Of the choices you mentioned...I'd get an X100 and go on two trips (hey, I travel cheap!). I'd be off to Iceland or Portugal, then off to London (my favorite city in the world) for some street shooting.

5k is a lot of money and if you're smart with it, it will last you a while on your travels.

I'd buy film, developer, & a much nicer scanner than what I have. I might buy a CV50/2.5 to companion with the CV35/2.5 I now have.

used Nikon D700
Yamaha Motif XS7 + a pair of KRK Rokit 5

or...

Spend the money on an extra 1U server and co-location for 2 years and finally launch my camera-related website.

X-Pro 1 + Trip...
though the answer of "do nothing and hoard the money" seems the wiser choice. LOL
