Membership in an exclusive club
Come Tuesday, September 21, I'll be one more member of the Leica owners club.
This one is, apparently, a bit more exclusive... Of course, gone are my dreams of snatching a CV 35mm f1.4 now. Why, because of one of my "playful bids" won me a Leica M5.
I'll be consulting this forum even more often... I don't know if I did well or not, but you'll see a lot of me. Good that I have some Wein cells stashed away somewhere...

Nah, the Leica Owners' Club ain't exclusive. They'll let anyone in if they've got the money. They'll even let in M5 owners. Not everyone is prejudiced against oversized Leicas.
(Sorry, couldn't resist).
Cheers,
R.

No mention of the secret handshake, initiation, or all the paperwork?
So that tattoo you all made me get was all for naught?

Well... there was so much fuzz here about owning a Leica M5... that's the exclusive club I meant. You mean there's none after all?

Well... for the price, Ralph, I won't complain. The meter is in its last kicks though... and that is a bit annoying. However, it'll have to wait in line for repair. I have a Nikon S2 that needs alignment and has been waiting since May.
Will keep you all posted!

The meter is worth fixing, if it's going out, And the MR-9 Battery Adapter allows modern 1.35v cells to be used. A 386 Silver. (I have one for my M5)

Yeah used to be. Now, as Roger said, not so much. Tell me you bought a new M9 and three or four lenses, then we'll talk.
I own a CL, and it was cheaper than my P&S digital...
Enjoy! Used Leicas are fine machines, like Nikon, Canon and TYashicas, to name a few great rangefinders.

With so much bragging from the M5 owners here, I thought I'd give it a try...
Now, the camera has never been altered (or so says the seller). This means it may need 1.35 V batteries. Do Wein cells do the trick? I know they're short lived, but then, the meter is apparently dying... if not dead already.
Let me know. Thanks for the welcome into the M5 Club!

You're right, Chris...
Them, I must confess to having accumulated a number of cameras, but never as many as some forum members. I have four M bodies (two M6TTL, one M3 and one M4-2) and next Tuesday they'll be five with this M5 I just won. Then, last May I fell for a Nikon S2 (it came with a 50mm f1.4 "kit" lens). As for SLRs, I have a Nikon F100, one F5 and one D700. I'm leaving out a Nikon 6006 I got from my brother last June (along with a 28-70 slow zoom).
Do I need any more?
Not really... but they're sooooooo nice!

Nikon SP. That would round it out.
Prices on Barnack Leicas are WAY down.
This is fun.

Francisco, Congrats on the find! If your M5 needs any meter repair or tuning, there is no one better than Sherry K. to do the work. She adores the M5 and she does bring them back to full bloom. For everyday light, it is worth the money to have that meter repaired and re-calibrated for 1,5 volt batteries.

Brian, I've been looking for one that costs less than my mortgage payment or a Nikon D3X... but so far, no such luck.
Thomas, Sherry will get my M5 for sure. She's really quick, and apparently the expert on M5 bodies.

The Wein cells last a long time. I can't remember the last time i changed it out. I have had a dud before but, I guess that can happen! Great camera. Probably one of the top metered Leica's if you ask me. Good luck. I think they all need a match needle meter.

Nah, that was the IIIa that got me in. Everyone knows that REAL Leicas don't have bayonet mounts.
(Cue owner of pre-1932 Leica saying, "REAL Leicas don't have rangefinders...)
Seriously, I'm sure SolaresLarrave will have great fun with it.
Cheers,
R.
