Sf-20 & M7 Ttl

I'm hoping to explore off camera flash options with a cable (already have some wireless gear). Will the Nikon SC-17 carry the TTL signal from the m7 to my sf-20?

No.
You either need a flash mounted directly to the hotshoe with the correct TTL capability or a Metz unit with the correct 3502 adapter mounted on the hotshoe. Note: one use a handle mount Metz unit for off camera flash but the 3502 must be on the hotshoe.
If you just want a signal and not TTL capability, set your SF20 on AUTO, set the ASA and f stop and use that way.
I use a Metz handle unit off camera with my 21mm without TTL because the 21mm finder must be on the hotshoe. Works fine.-Dick

I shoot with Metz 54MZ for off camera. Bounce it off the wall or on tripod with small umbrella.

And oddly enough, I can use an SF-20 with the SC-17 TTL cable Nikon makes. Carries the signal right through. Now I just need to practice a bit more.

Works fine for me w/ the SF-20, SC-17 and my M6TTL too.
As long as the connections are in the right place it's not a problem, and in this case they match up fine.

Thanks for the heads up on that one Brian. I did some band work that night. You can see it here:
