your oldest regularly used digital camera

Just wondering what the life of a digital camera is. I'm looking for digital cameras in regular use and not cameras used infrequently which are still working.

I'm using a canon 10d that was listed as broken when I bought it. Still working after new batteries.

I upgraded to a Nikon D300 but I used a 2004 D70 up until six months ago. I used a lot of different digitals as well and I dare you to pick which were from the D70 versus the newer $$$ cameras at portfolio print or online sizes ;-)

In practical terms the newer cameras have nicer LCDs and a couple stops better ISO performance. On the other hand, the 6mp D70 files are fast to work on, don't take up as much storage space... the D70 was really one of Nikon's best ever cameras, the metering and focusing are top notch, the menus are much simpler and cleaner. I don't see that many dead ones either, once electronics have run OK for a year, there is little to break them until the glue and solder get brittle and the LCDs fade in 2018 or so....

My one and only non-cell-phone digital camera is E-PL1 so it's less than a year old. I see I'll be fine with this camera until it dies on me considering the tasks it's got: ebay, classifieds, kitty pic, camera porn.

But probably just for fun, I'll get something else within a year or two, keeping only one digital camera for a given moment.

Oh wait, there is a Canon A510 (3mp) point and shoot somewhere in the closet so that's the oldest: 5 years old.

I got my Minolta 7D after I sold the Olympus CW-8080 which was my first digital camera. The 7D is currently my only digital camera. I do no use it much though. Mostly in ZOOs or for eBay items and such.

Canon G3. It's really really old and very slow to use. But it has many features like RAW and a flipping viewfinder that only came back to G10/G11 I think. I only use it for some odd product shots and such.

My oldest one is also my only one - a Pentax K20D that's been going strong for, oh, a year or so.

Cheating slightly, Canon Powershot A85 from 2004. My 9yr old daughter uses it all the time now.

My 1D is still kicking but with a new owner. I'm a second owner of a 1D Mk II that shows no signs of slowing down. But I trade them in on a regular basis so I can't claim that I've had one for a long time. But, I still do have an original Canon digital Elph (S100?) that I bought new in 2001. I don't use it anymore but it still works fine. As long as you don't drop them too hard or abuse them too bad they work just fine for a long time. I don't know if they'll last as long as my M3 but few things do.

I've got some old Nikon Coolpix that works, but I never use it- in fact I almost just threw it out yesterday. My D-Lux3 is in regular use.

I purchased a used Nikon D1x in 2004, the camera was introduced in 2001. I used it this week in a product shoot. The armor is coming off a bit but it still takes the A/C power adapter, tethers to a laptop with firewire, and shoots great.

+1 on the D70. I shoot a Nikon D70s all the time, it's a great camera.

Purchased in 2004 - Panasonic Lumix FZ1v2 (v2 = firmware hacked to give aperture and shutter priority). It's the first compact superzoom with image stabilization by Panasonic. It's only 2 megapixels but I've printed 8X10 stuff (portraits) and they look fine. The cool thing about this camera is that it stays at f2.8 throughout its 12X optical zoom range, and it is also capable of infrared with a Hoya R72 filter. These cameras are pretty cheap now on eBay. Don't be put off by the low megapixel count. It's a great picture-taker. I shoot with primes, when I need a zoom lens, I reach for this. Web shots no issue, fine for prints up to 8x10 - honest injun! I have several as proof.

Kodak DX6490 4megapixels. Probably bought around 2004. I've made quite a few quality 11x14" prints with this camera. Was rated highly by digicam reviewers. Has a wonderful Schneider Kreuznach Variogon 38-320 (35mm equivalent) lens w/10X optical zoom. Shows no sign of wearing out. I still use it now and then as it's light and easier to carry than my Pentax K20D DSLR.

The only digital I own at the moment is my Canon 10D which is 5-7 years old. It's still a great camera, I love it.

I use a Nikon E3 for documenting my projects. It is full-frame, and can use my SB-29 macro light. PCMCIA cards make it easy for slapping the card into a laptop on the net. It is from the late 90s.

My Canon A620 has been a great little camera five years on and if you take your time is capable of impressive results. It started making a weird noise when focusing a while ago but still seems to be fine ... I've actually been hoping it would die so I can upgrade to something better but that doesn't seem too likely.

I agree with Frank's comments about the Nikon D70 ... I don't think anyone has made a better digital SLR than this camera and when I sold mine after four years I was amazed at it's resale value ... when Nikon get it right they really get it right!
