Beautiful collection Brian, you've brought them to life.

This Museum is well worth visiting. When I was a kid in Columbus, GA, we drove by the raised hulls of these confederate ironclads. They were salvaged from the Muscogee River ~1960. It's wonderful to see a full Museum built around them.

Monitors!

Hi, for you to know, a pair of Yank monitors were sold to the peruvian navy after the end of the secession war, due to their low profile they travelled very slowly. The journey to Peru lasted almost for a year from the atlantic coast of usa to the port of Callao in that country.

Then in the Pacific War between Chile and Peru, those two monitors now called Manco Capac and Atahualpa succeded in keeping our battleships from gunnig the city of Arica, they had very large guns but couldn´t move to make war in the open sea.

At last that city-port was taken through land attack but never through sea, those monitors were sunken by their crews and now rest in the shallow waters of Arica´s bay.

Bye!

Huascar

Great link Brian!

Check on this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hu%C3%A1scar_(ship)

Huascar is a monitor that belonged to peru, during the pacific war against this country, this extraordinary warship with his extraordinary commander made things almost impossible to the chilean war efforts.
After being chased by two more powerful but slower chilean battleships it was captured and put into national service, until today it`s fonded at the naval base of Talcahuano, south of chile.

It`s quite special since it`s one of the few surviving and almost usable monitor.
It`s history is surrounded by brave names and events from peru and chile and its regarded until today as a matter of relative conflict tween our nations.

Bye!
