Coolscan 9000 repair cost

I ran across a 9000 that powers up but the dealer mostly deals with appliances and has not checked other functions of this used item. it's a buyer beware situation. If the contingency of repair were cheap enough, it would be a option as it's under $1K. Does anyone have experience / advice int his area?

Is there any way you could load VueScan on a laptop and try it out in the shop before buying?

VueScan..... http://www.hamrick.com/index.html

If it's $1,000, that's a bargain, probably because it isn't fully functional. Used they go for double that on ebay, new at triple that price.

Similarly, if someone told me they had a 17" MacBook Pro to sell me for $600, but weren't sure if it worked, I'd bet that it didn't.

Coolscan 9000

Do not buy it, there is no way to predict the cost of repairs. Get on a a list, pay full retail($2K) and have peace of mind.

Don't know about Japan. Nikon US put the repair cost into 3 category : $2xx, $5xx, $8xx. From what I heard from the repair guy, most people endup paying $5xx. This is for 8000/9000ed.

The "flat rate" means if your repair estimate falls into let's say the $5xx category, all labor + parts are covered in the $5xx.

From what some of the folks on here have reported, I think buying it sounds like a reasonable risk.

FWIW: I had my Coolscan 8000 repaired and the AF carriage replaced. Cost £180 in the UK, I'd imagine it'd be less in Japan?

I just sent my 4000ED to Nikon (Melville, NY) and they quoted a flat $275 also. The flat rate may differ for other models.

The $275 flat rate only applies to 4000/5000ed.
Like mentioned above, the repair flat rate for 8000/9000ed are broken down into :$2xx, $5xx, $7xx. Flat rate meaning : labor + parts included for the price.

I'm staring at a quote from Nikon-USa for a repair of my 8000 and it comes to $350 plus tax and s/h.
