Hi from a RF newbie!
Hi all
Was lucky enough to be given an old unloved Zorki 4 with a Jupiter 8 lens yesterday. It was in a bit of a mess and was about to be thrown into landfill along with some other old cameras. I've already fallen in love with it and have freed up the stuck knobs and lens and everything seems to working ok except for a sticky shutter at slow shutter speeds. I havent used the camera yet but cant wait. Is it easy to fix this or shall I just avoid slow shutter speed conditions!!
Can anyone advise of anywhere other than the obvious ebay for lenses, spares etc?
I cant wait to get going with the Zorki, Ive havent used a film camera for ages so Im really stoked about using one again!

like newspaperguy said, read the stickys and read the manual, slow speeds may sort out with a bit of use, they may not. There is sometimes lens in the classifieds here and a place called - fedka- is often reccomended also. regards |

I have bought from www.fedka.com and have had great service from them. His prices are a bit higher than buying from the FSU but the items come from the US and shipping is pretty fast. BTW the Jupiter 8 is one of the better FSU lenses along with the Jupiter 9 (85/2) both are Sonnar optical formulas and are great for B&W IMHO.
Welcome to the forum and that FSU will have you wanting a Leica soon enough!

Welcome. The Zorki 4 is a great camera to learn on as is the Jupiter 8 lens. Unless it's been soaking in a barrel of s**t someplace it should free itself up after a few hundred dry clicks. The slow speeds are usually off after a few years of sitting. Work the lens few times as well.
Check the stickies as has already been mentioned.
If all else fails a CLA will be worth while ( it will need one sooner than later anyway), especially since it was free.
Run some film through it as soon as you get a consistent shutter action and diagnose from there.
Lots of help available here but read through this section of the forum first.

Welcome, Chris. A shutter sticking at slow speeds is often an indication that the other speeds will soon begin to give trouble. As Ducky said, the camera cost you nothing so you may as well invest in an overhaul. Here too, Fedka's service is said to be good.

Thanks for the warm welcome and all the advice guys, very much appreciated.
I've installed a roll of film so I cant wait to see how it performs.
Im making my way through the stickys and I think I will treat it to a CLA, whats this likely to cost and is there anyone in the UK who can do it?

Welcome aboard.
It might pay to give it a little exercise before putting a film in it. Just wind the thing on and click the shutter, then repeat and repeat...
Oleg's ( www.okvintagecamera.com) your best bet for overhauls as he has bits in stock and you'll be snookered if you strip it down and find a pin hole or two to be dealt with..

Thanks David, I think that I'll send it to him. I dont fancy pulling it apart myself.
I cant put it down at the moment though so it might not be for a while yet!
Ive got a film in now, cant wait to get it developed to see what the photos look like! |

The Zorki 4 isn't hard to service yourself. If you're stuck to get it done and don't want to be bothered sending it out of the UK, I can do it for you - provided you're in no rush! Otherwise, Oleg and others come recommended.

cheers wolves3012, thats a very kind offer , I may well take you up on that. At the moment it seems ok, since ive been using it the problem at slow speeds has got much better so with a bit more use it might be ok, if not I'll get in touch.
