Coolscan 9000 question..

Ok.. my Nikon Coolscan 9000 purchased from an RFF member arrived today. I've got no software I want to download viewscan. Can I just download and install viewscan to get up and running or do I need some other nikon drivers in place?

Thank you,

Oren

It's "Vuescan". And it will work without any special driver - but it can use the Nikon driver if installed. Nikon Scan can be downloaded from Nikon, but at least in Europe you'll have to register at least one Nikon product (or rather, register yourself and the serial from just about any Nikon product) on their site to be able to proceed to the download pages.

You don't need anything but the Vuescan software.

Why don't you have Nikon Software ? And if not, why can't you download it from their website ? I use it (on my Mac) and am quite happy. The Vuescan I find too "fiddly", and I don't see any improvement in the scans to justify it.

Your MacMini it is probably FW800 - you will need a 9 pin(FW800) to 6 Pin (FW400) cable or adapter.

If you use external storage as I do with my mini, you might consider this. Pop a drive into an enclosure with both FW800 and FW400 ports. You'll solve your backup and connectivity needs in one swoop since you can chain the scanner to the external drive. Offloads some file transfer from the CPU to FW as well.

Phil....I have a Drobo drive connected to the Mac Mini.. so you are suggesting I might plug the scanner directly into that?

I would suggest getting things working with the scanner connected directly to the Mini before trying to daisy chain it. It may work but I have read that it can cause problems - the Nikon can be temperamental.
