Hehehe... He even has a thing with those old diesel engines, you will see "boogler boogler" in lots of his strips.

Sometimes Steve Bell seems like the only sane man in the galaxy, and come to think of it, that is a really scary thought by itself...

The story under some of the subsequent cartoons about the girl being restrained for filming police makes the cartoon even more prescient.

Yes - but it is a perfect take on the mindset now. Hope the madness of it can be shown for all to see, and that there will be a backlash someday.

Here in Oslo the police sent out lots of notices saying "not to take photographs from windows" and so on when Obama just visited. Obviously there is some real security issues involved, but what about suspending laws saying this is perfectly legal? And nobody objected - that is probably the worst thing...

And then this business with face-recognition software soon to be found in malls, we are certainly heading towards something we do not really know the limits of... Here in Europe there should be lots of citizens to object to all new surveillance and infringements, having lived behind the iron curtain. But they seem to go along as well, so who will be able to stop this?

Ridicule and reclessness will be needed I think, and showing how absurd these new laws and regualtions really are if they would be implemented 100%...

Note that the 'officials' in the cartoon are PCSO ( police community support officers ) and not police officers. Whenever anyone has approached me with an all too heavy handed manner it's been PCSO or the even less impressive and even more poorly informed 'mall cop' types with their bomber jackets, black cargo pants and radio belt.

To be even handed, I've never had an issue with the police other than during Royal and State visits. At such times producing my Press card or if I've not been working simply stating my interest as a spectator has been enough to keep them happy.

Personally I think there is already the beginnings of a backlash, small though it is. Lampoonery such as this is often one of the most effective tools for change...perhaps things may get better?!

I think the tabloid hysteria/paranoia over terrorists and paedophiles outweighs the power of the cartoons unfortunately

It is crazy that the UK has the largest amount of CCTV cameras per head in the world - permanently recording everyone as they pass - with no way of knowing what happens to the footage, and yet people get so upset at someone taking a few still images that they might appear in.
