where to buy cheap films...

Hi,

I recently bought a canonet and would like to practice film shooting under budget. Where would be the best place to buy films?

Also, do you have any film recommendation for beginners?

If you want to shoot black and white, go to Freestyle Photo and buy the Arista Premium film; that's a Freestyle store brand that is made by Kodak. The 100 version is really Plus-X, the 400 is really Tri-X. $2 a roll, 1/3 what these films sell for at my local camera store under the Kodak names.

For color, go to Walmart and check out the 4-packs of 24 exp. Kodak and Fuji color film. Fuji 400 is $8 for 4 rolls. Very cheap! The kodak stuff is a little higher priced but still cheap, and they have 100, 200, and 800 speed as well from both manufacturers.

Welcome to the forum.

Colour of black and white negative film will be more forgiving of exposure error. Slide film usually takes a little practice.

Outdated film on ebay is probably a good place to start for a few practice rolls. Lets see some photos from the Canonet soon.

Target sells film when they carry it. Packages of fugi and kodak run about $2+ a roll, approximately for 3, 4 rolls.

Someone here sold me 100 rolls of Kodak 100UC at around $1/roll.

Don't know about Texas but in my area, Walmart and Target no longer stock film. Try drugstore chains. Flickr is great for getting an idea of what to expect from their brands.

Doesn't sound like you're into developing your own, so if you want to give B&W a try, it's probably cheaper to use Kodak BW400CN (standard C-41 process, which your drugstore can do) than "real" B&W (which you need to take to a pro lab). Again, see Flickr for results. The drugstore prints will be on color paper and look like crap, but the stuff scans really nicely.

I look for sales. I often times can get Fuji 200 for under $2 a roll at Target' or else the rebranded Fuji for about the same price at Walgreens. Yes, Wally World often has good film prices but I seldom go there anymore.

Two items here as a follow up -- Walgreens has re-badged their house-brand 200. Same (original) box for the 400, at least in the shop I went to on Saturday. The codes on the negative strips look the same.

Also, at least around here, Target' (pronounced with a faux accent aigu) does sell film and single-use cameras. They appear to be phasing out Fuji products, however.
