Very OT; Canon MC query

If /anyone/ here has ever owned a Canon MC can they please answer this: there is a switch (in fact the only switch on the camera) that says self timer / pre focus. Apparently it has dual roles. I can get it to self-time but how does pre-focus work?

Sorry for asking here but I just couldn't face rec.photo.equipment.35mm and the inevitable 'why are you using one of those, you should be using a stylus epic etc.' helpful response.
