Photographers who DO use Leica and Nikon RF's

Important Notice:

John Densky (emraphoto) and I have decided to move this thread to the Nikon forum, to build on this great resource of photographers, pro, artists, and anyone we (of you might consider important). We are somewhat focussing on those who publish or show in galleries, or have had museum shows, but the are no rules. If you love the work add it to our list. But remember this is about people who use rangefinders in their work, not SLRs!

And most of all this thread is not about disagreement, please don't post criticizing someone else's choices. I have deleted all the posts (most of all mine!) arguing about what defines a pro. For the sake of this thread, stop worrying about such trivialities, and concentrate on what work moves you, what is interesting to you are a rangefinder user. I will keep the thread on course with some light moderation.
--Fred (Nikonhswebmaster)

Help make this thread a resource for inspiration.

Every once and while i stumble upon a thread or two where it's officially declared that great photographers (often Pros) don't use this camera or that camera any more.

It always makes me scratch my head as i see many a "pro" in my travels and loads of them are using point and shoots, m's and even (gasp) m8's?

I thought i would start a thread with links to working folks, producing mighty fine photos with some not so common tools (rangefinders)

Here's a fella i think you should all know. last time i chatted with him he had gone back to leica's. a pair of m8's i reckon? could be film m's? hell, i don't know but i DO KNOW he's sporting a dot. (probably taped up DOUBLE GASP), just to start the thread off!

I recently posted that my buddy Colin Perkel of The Canadian Press, the national news agency, spent two months is Kandahar with Canadian forces and used two G9s. One packed in because of the climate. He posted a personal video -- shot with a Canon G9:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tv5OW...&feature=email

Agency correspondents have to do photos, video, radio and, of course, print. He did not want an SLR to lug around in 50 degree heat wearing 50 pounds of body armour.

I think you will find that the real pros -- the photojournalists -- are less obsessed with equipment than people on this forum.

As someone else pointed out, it's whatever does the job.

well as far as the "pro" thing go's i'll leave it firmly rooted in the "grey area". i do know the fella i noted is indeed making pay cheques.

Mr Burnett is a GREAT EXAMPLE! Rodney Smith as well!

maybe this can turn into a reference thread for the next time a "pro's don't use (insert whatever camera here)" comment pops up?

"As someone else pointed out, it's whatever does the job.'

this is not the essence of the thread. the point is to highlight folks who are working with some of our beloved cameras. to celebrate them if you will.

I'm a pro who uses M's. Almost exclusively. The only time I use an SLR is for food reviews or lazy days.

Jeff Widener usually has an M7 or M4p hanging around his neck when ever I see him around Honolulu ... I think he uses the M bodies exclusively for his own projects .... He shot Martin Meredith's wedding using M's (Plays saxophone and keyboards for UB40)

http://www.jeffwidener.com/h/ ...... most his black and white work is shot using M's ....

Here's an old (2001) review of M system cameras from a pro from my state (Texas). I find it an interesting read:

David Allen Harvey still shoots occasionally with Leicas, but it's mostly Nikon DSLR's, now.

Ralph Gibson uses Leica M cameras almost exclusively for his pro work. And it's pretty nice work, if you can get it!
