New member greetings (and question!)

Hello, all. Just a lurker here who decided to finally take the plunge and both sign on here AND finally pick up a Leica.

Started off with a big hacking dSLR. Wondered what all the rangefinder fuss was about. A Canonet became my gateway drug...um...rangefinder. Really loved getting back to the basics. Saw that a local Leica distributer had one unused M6TTL left on their shelves, being sold at a discount - only about 100 bucks over what their used ones were going for, so I checked it out, liked what I saw (and felt in the test shots), so I shelled out for it.

I didn't do my homework regarding lenses, though, and my Japanese isn't good enough to quiz the shop assistants (how do you say "asphereical" in Japanese?). I learned how to shoot with a Nikkor 50/1.8 on my dSLR, so I'm looking at buying some flavor of 50 to start learning my Leica. There are so many flavors out there, though...If anyone out there could point me in the right direction about the various 50s out there, I'd be most grateful.

For a new M6TTL the classic 50mm lens pairing would be a Summicron f/2. One of the best lenses on the planet and relatively fast.

Welcome Ish. Don't worry about "asphereical", like Gene says, they will definately understand "Summicron." The CV Nokton is a good choice new if your budget is an issue. You can look at used Canon and Nikon LTM lenses too.

Check out these threads, Richard just recently went lens shopping for his new Leica. Good luck, let us know what you choose.

After a few hours reading old posts around the web, a Summicron does seem the way to go. Can't see paying for the extra stop of a Summilux, especially as I'm moving in from digital-land and will probably be overwhelmed by the thin DOF/wider anyway.

The thing I *don't* have any handle on whatsoever is the different ages/editions of the Summicron. Alot has been said about it, but it's all been assuming knowledge I don't have. Can anyone give the condensed "Summicron 50/2.0 History for Dummies" speech?

(edit) And cheers for all the replies...2 just got posted while I was typing up this one!

(edit2) Nevermind, the threads Rover reccommended had some good links that explained all. I am enlightened. Thanks again!
