Two new (to me) Yashikas (G??&GSN)

I just bought two Yashicas on Ebay for a very reasonable price, so I was very happy about the purchases.

One is Yashika "G??" with a 1.7 Yashinon-DX lens, f=45mm, Japanese manufacture.
I took a roll of 12 shots w/100 ASA film this afternoon, and all came out, but I don't know the quality as I did not have prints made yet. When I do get the prints, I will scan them in and upload the best. The camera was so quiet, that I did not know whether the shutter was working. I had to make a battery adapter, but the indicator does not show the battery to be working nor does the red or yellow spot signal anything to me. I don't want to do anything rash on tearing into it, especially after my disasterous attempt at working on a Canonet, so my first question is:

Is an operating battery a necessary requirement for taking pictures. If so my pictures being the proof of the pie, so to speak, it appears that the battery is not necessary to be able to take pictures, right or wrong?

Second question - How can I check the circuits?

The second Yashica is a GSN with a Color Yashinon DX lens, 1.7, f=45mm. which powered up with my battery adapter, showed red and amber lights, as appropriate to indicate the acceptable f stop, and goes through all motions except shutter release, which it does do when it feels like it, obviously unacceptable conduct for a camera. What is my first step for this baby?

Both cameras are really nice and I don't want to mess them up. I can upload digital photos of the cameras if anyone wants to see them.

Thanks for your review and response.
Terry

Right. Yashica-guy 's site is the place to check. He shows all the Electro models so you can probably tell exactly what model you have and he discusses repair them.
