Quick question for Mamiya 7 owners

Hi,

With reference to the 35mm panorama adapter, are there frame lines or some sort of indicator within the viewfinder showing the area covered by the adapter?

I searched the forum and have found only one vague reference and I am curious to exactly how the framing is done.

Hi John,

I have used the Mamiya 7 for a very short period of time. I have a copy of the user manual in pdf format should you need one.

The frame lines DO have four frame markers for the 135 panoramic mask (similar to the four corners of the 135mm frame lines in a Leica).

I've got the urge again for a M7. The chance to have 6x7 and a cheap 'Xpan' for 35mm is proving hard to resist.

I suggest that you do some searching about the 35mm insert because I remember reading that it wasn't very good, but for what reason I can't remember. The M7 is great, though! I think you can still download the instruction manuals from Mamiya's website.

Oddly enough, I find I mostly use 35mm format. It changes how I look at things and I find I like the pano look better than the 6X7 format. It does have marks to indicate the framelines. It works very well. The only downside is that it is a little complicated to covert back and forth between the 6X7 and 35.

I have shot with a Mamiya 7 for many years but never felt the need for a 35mm pano adapter. I just shoot full frame and crop the way I want.

Every film I use is available in 120 since I do not shoot Kodachrome. So I maximize opportunities by minimizing equipment. Most importantly, I am not locked into the pano mode when I want a full frame.

Ever since I got my Minolta multipro scanner and scanned some of my old mamiya 645 negs, I've longed to use the 6x7 holder. So first and foremost, it's about the large neg. But there has always been the lure of the Xpan format. It may not be as convenient but being able to run some 35mm pano through the camera is a big advantage and I believe a justifiable compromise.

Can the 35mm pano framelines appear when 120 film is loaded? Or do you need to guess?
