where to buy 39mm filter for CV35?

Hello, I just received my 35/2.5 today from cameraquest. the silver lens and black body combo actually doesn't look as weird as i thought it might. kindda retro and grows on you.

Anyhow, i went to 2 camera shops to look for a filter but none could be found! i was hopeful the first shop might have it since they were clearing all their film cameras and accessories... all the shelves are stocked with digital stuff. the salesman was impressed when i showed him what i wanted to use the filter on. he's german and told me he remembered voigtlander from when he was a child. he then went to check the leica cabinets for a leica filter! thankfully they didnt have it in stock. i might have been tempted to buy it just to have the words Leica on some part of my camera ... then again the price of these things... he then lamented that the leicas weren't selling well because of the high price. (oh yah, apparently branden fraser the actor uses a leica and bought a couple of lenses from him when he was in australia)

anyhow, in the 2nd store, the salesman there asked me how much i paid for the lens. when i told him, he then said "oh, we could have done u a similar deal". funny thing is, i don't know why they would have just 1 CV 35 lens in store cos he told me another person just came in the store earlier looking for LTM lenses and they didn't have any apart from that one lens. anyhow, the store doesn't even sell the bessas.

i don't even know what i'm rambling on about ... basically its really tough to find stuff for film cameras here in syd it seems. only consolation is i found a mag called photographic trader chock full of ads for 2nd hand and new camera stuff. it also advertised the upcoming camera mart in syd.

ok, back to my initial point. is there somewhere online or in sydney i can buy a filter for my lens?

Can't the store just order it for you? 39mm filters are a really common size, still made by most filter manufacturers (B+W, Heliopan,...), if the store sells any filters at all, they should be able to get one for you!

...they have plenty of new Leica gear and the like so might be likely to have 39mm filters, they also have an interesting assortment of second hand stuff. Worth a try either way.

If the stores don't turn up anything try Camera-Collectors.com. They have used 39mm UV Walz filters for US $4.00. I have bought from them and they are good.

Don't know what filters exactly you want, but if it's not just a UV (for which you might not want to spend too much) you ought to look into B+Ws and Heliopans. They all make 39mm filters. So does Hoya. You could try online stores.

www.filterfind.net has some hard to find filters/ clearance filters. I'm not sure if shipping will work out for you though. But you must be able to find Hoya/Heliopan/B+W dealers in/ around Sydney. They should have what you want.

Now I'm not sure I told you anything useful.

The only shop I know near me that carries 39mm filters is the one in Hartford which also sells Leica cameras. It is not uncommon, but not in high demand for anything other than rangefinder lenses.

Careful when buying 39mm filters. They come with two different thread pitch. Leica and B+W use 0.5mm pitch. My CV lens, Pancake II, used 0.75mm pitch and I used a Nikon made one; the one that is supposed to fit on drop-in filter holder for super tele lenses.

My B+W 39mm filters fit the CV lenses (Color Skopar 35/2.5 Classic, 90/3.5 Apo Lanthar, 25/4 Snapshot Skopar) perfectly - maybe it is only Leica lenses that have the different pitch?

Hey Kris, is the Nikon drop-in threaded? I thought it just fit in a holder as a rear filter for super teles and had no threads. Please let me know, this is of interest to me.

Anyway to clarify on the thread issue, all the standard 39mm filters of today (B+W, Heliopan, Hoya) are 0.5mm threads. Companies like B+W and Heliopan wil also custom make filters for you with the other pitch but I don't know how cost effective that is. I believe the Leica 39mm filters are also 0.5mm pitch. Which is why there is a misfit problem with the old C-Summicron (and maybe others like Kris mentions) that has a 0.75mm pitch thread. You can rely on this bit of information. I have it from personally trying on various things/ calling up and speaking with filter manufacturers.

Anand, the filter holder for Nikon super tele is drop-in type. But you must screw the filter to the holder.

Maybe it was just CV Pancake II that has 0.75mm pitch? Or even only my sample of Pancake II? Anyway, only that Nikon filter fits on the PII. You can ask Scott (scottgee1) as he is now the owner of both the PII and the Nikon filter.

I have 4 current model leica lenses that take a 39mm filter. The standard .5 pitch filters fit just fine. The old .75 pitch filters do not fit.

I've had some difficulty finding a variety of 39mm filters as well. The standard UV, skylight, warming and black and white filters can be obtained here in the US pretty easily. For more specialized filters, the Cokin system makes a 39mm adapter whcih gives you a huge variety of specialized filters as a pretty reasonable price. They block the botom right corner of the framelines on 35mm or wider, but this can be solved by cutting one of the corners of the filter off.

I've also been able to find step up rings from 39mm to 47mm which work pretty well if you have a bunch of 49mm filters from another camera.

Both of these solutions require the use of after market lens shades on the Leica lenses. I don't know how the shades fit on CV lenses.

Not sure where the OP is from.. but in the UK Robert White is a good source of filters.. got some B+W filters for my 39mm CV 25/4 there... usually next day delivery with them.
Also there's a company called SRB in the UK (http://www.srbfilm.co.uk/adaptors.htm) which will apparently make any step up ring you require which could help - I've not used them tho.
