Summarit step-down?

I have a 50/1.5 Summarit and I've read it takes 40.5 filters (until now I've just been handholding a larger one in front of the lens...)

Anyone think there'd be vignetting using a 39mm and a step-down? I know the proof is in the shooting, but I live in Africa and it's a long time and effort for film processing, not to mention ordering the gear...just wondering if it was a patently bad idea before trying it out.
