Canon G-III QL17

Just purchased this jewel for 15.00(Canon G-III QL17)
lens is clean and clear , shutter works in manual
Has a bad dent in the lens filter ring right above the meter cell, seals are shot , I put a z625 battery in it and the meter doesn't work or the battery check light.
looks new other then the issues I described.
Anyone know of a good repair guy that can bring back like new ???
Thanks for the help

Seals are not hard to replace- "just Yucchy". Jon Goodman sells kits for it.

The battery compartment is probably corroded, or the copartment under the bottom plate needs to be checked. Two screws, the bottom plate is off. Be careful of the flat spring that holds the cover in place. The compartment is held in place by two little plastic tabs, as I recall. They broke on mine and shorted the compartment out. I used electrical tape to insulate it.

Essex camera and other repair shops such as KEH will fix the camera. Figure about $70.

For that amount of money its a good buy and well worth a CLA.

No idea where you are located but people here will know a good repair person that can work on it. If you are a DIY man you can get advice on that too.

I wouldn't bother much about the meter. I have several old cams that need the PX625 mercury battery, You can use adapters, but I just carry a Gossen Digiflash as 'do all' meter.

Whatever you do DON'T balk at the cost of getting it in good shape. Although millions have been made, in my experience it isn't all that easy to find anymore, especially working for 15$. And in good shape it is an excellent camera.

Mark's a nice guy. I've had good experiences with him when he worked on my yashicas.

Mark's good, fixed 2 Yashies and a Canon P for me. He's usually very fast, but can disappear from time to time with nary a word for weeks. After the P got back from a CLA it developed a problem with the film advance after the first 3 frames I shot. He told me to send it back, and repaired it "free" within 2 weeks, shipping time included.

Between shipping and repair cost, it is going to be worth it, rather than just buying one that works?

Depends what it's worth to the user. All these cameras are 30 plus years old and can benefit from a CLA. You can keep buying user ones hoping to find one that works and hope it keeps working or just take the jump and spend $80 to get the camera working like new.

I sent one of my Canonets to Mark Hama. Works good now, but it took 3 months, compared to the 2 weeks that was quoted.

For me it was worth sending it out, sure it cost me more than I paid for it to get it fixed, but I wanted peace of mind knowing that i'd have a working Canonet instead of gambling on buying more that may or may not work.

I've always read good reviews on Hama's work, haven't tried him yet. To me, it would really be worth the $$ to get it back to spec instead of trying to grab a user from the shelves...

I've had Mark Hama repair a Yashica 124 with a jammed up shutter. The repair time was surprisingly fast, less than two weeks shipping to and back.

But I will say he is a hard person to get in contact with. Emails don't seem to work very well but the few times I called I always got him on the phone.

I've got a few cannonets that need some repair work. If anybody gets ahold of him would they mind sharing the repair quote? For my Yashica 124 he said repairs were a flat $125. This was a little less than a year ago.

I had Mark repair a 124g last month because the shutter speeds were off. Very, very fast turnaround. I'll be sending him my Olympus SP that needs repairing.
