Unscrewing diopter (M7)

I'm considering buying an empty diopter from Leica for my M7 and having an optician put in the correct glass for me. I'm beyond the -3 to +3 range.

Before buying the diopter, I want to make sure I can free (unscrew) the exisitng diopter.

I - and peope stronger than me - can't budge it. I even tried a pair of small pliers to no avail.

I believe the outer ring of the diopter is rubber and I'm tempted to try to take it off in the hope that if I get to the metal interior I can budge the diopter.

I'm looking for advice on how to proceed. By the way, if I destroy the ruibber ring, will I be able get a new one from Leica?

Noooooooooo. The diopter screws into the existing eyepiece. You don't remove it.

Many thanks for replying... Do you mean that:

1. the current glass remains and

2. the new diopter with its glass is screwed onto the exterior rim of the current (existing) eyepiece?

Yes. Exactly. The diopter screws into the existing eyepiece.

I don't think that the eye piece on the M7 and MP unscrew anyway. You'll probably just succeed in destroying it trying to use pliers on it.

Am I correct in thinking that it is the thread on the INTERIOR of the new diopter that screws into the INTERIOR thread of the exisitng diopter?

That's correct. Just screws right in. They also tend to unscrew as they rub against clothing when hanging from the shoulder. I lost one that way. Now I check occasionally to be sure the diopter is screwed in tight.
