'AP'mag. - interesting comparisons re. G1!

Just got my latest copy of ( UK mag. ) 'Amatuer Photographer'. I don't usually take much notice of all the tests on new digital toys, but this week there is a comparison/evaluation of different sensors, that is quite interesting - featuring the Panasonic G1 4/3, Nikon D300 APS-C, and the full-frame D3. To me, the most surprising test results were that - under bright, evenly illuminated test conditions the G1 was capable of resolving more detail than both the larger sensor cameras!, even at its highest setting! ( ISO 3200 ). As to be expected, the ff D3 shows superiority at higher ISO settings, under mixed, low lighting.

Say what? There is no way the G1 can resolve more detail than the D3. While I haven't seen the argument, there has got to be a problem there.

Why use ISO3200 in bright, even light?

When given plenty of light, It's not surprising that a sensor with higher pixel density could outresolve one with lower pixel density.

YUP! they say D3 owners may want to sit down, before reading the conclusions - 'cos under 'the bright, evenly illuminated test conditions, the G1 resolves more detail than both the D300 and the D3! ( EVEN at 3200 ISO ( NOT just ) )

40" x 60".....huh! - kid's stuff!!....I'd like to see some real enlargements!

They could have put a crappy old zoom lens on the D3.
The test is meaningless if we don't know what lenses were used.

The G1 could have a weaker anti-aliasing filter, which would increase the sharpness, but with a greater risk of aliasing. That's just a guess though.

Apparantly a Sigma 105mm f2.8 EX DG with appropriate mount for each camera, and camera -to -target distances adjusted accordingly, for the differing formats, the test was then repeated using the Panasonic Lumix G Vario 14-45mm f3.5-5.6 Asph. at the 45mm point, and various Nikkor zooms.

The G1 shows an excellent performance in this area and does very well indeed against the competition in this comparison of which some have a higher nominal resolution. The Panasonic's absolute resolution is a tad higher than even the Canon EOS450D's which is one of the highest resolving cameras in this class and the G1 still shows at least some detail up to very high frequencies. This is nothing short of impressive.

Which infringement has the higher fine?

If someone was not open to it, it would not be so successful.

Interesting post, though I too would like to see prints, but I am old fashioned.

those that don't see my warped Yorkshire sense of humour - read 'prosecution'! Cleethorpes?....an hour's drive - across what used to be the worlds longest suspension bridge......but I keep away! it's the pits! ( sorry Lincolnshire! )

They claim the best fish and chips. I will have to ask my friend what he thinks of Hull. ;-) Am I sensing a different football team?

I must have passed through a few years back to recall, or my friend John must have mentioned it. Cheaper for me to call Kent England than Kent, Ohio.

I did wonder what fate befell those squashed peas on the plate, was there a motor accident involving canned goods? ;-)
