Digital Leica M8 / M8.2 / M9 / M-E /Mono / M10 aka "M" Discussions about the Leica M8 /M 8.2 / M9 / M9-P/ M-E / M Monochrom / M10 aka "M": Leica digital M mount rangefinder cameras. Naming the new digital M the "Leica M" is VERY unfortunate as it will only confuse newbies with other Leica M cameras of the the past. Happily there is room for confusion with only the past 59 years of Leica M production ... since Leica introduced the Leica M system in 1953. All Hail for the Leica Marketing Department learning Leica M history!

Question M8 and 50mm Summicron DR

I am considering buying the cleanest "mintest" Summicron 50mm DR to use with my M4P that I can find.

I also have an M8 which I use more than the M4P. While I am content to use my two 35mm lenses as M8 normal lenses (equiv. 46.7mm), I would still like to be able to use a 50mm Summicrfon on the M8 as well.

My question: Will the DR Summicron 50mm fit on the M8 and will it be fully functional?

Any useful responses will be appreciated.

No it won't. The DR Summicron is one of the very few lenses that cannot be used on the M8.

There is a way to make it work. A repair person (I used DAG) can grind down the close-focus cam so that it no longer binds in the M8. Of course, this makes the lens unusable in the close-focus range. It still works fine from 1 meter to infinity. After thinking long and hard about how little I used the close-focus range, I had it done. I'm glad I did--I like the way the DR Summicron draws, and now I can get that quality on the M8.

Since you don't have the lens yet, you might consider getting the chrome "Rigid" Summicron instead. It's optically identical, but will work on the M8 without alteration.

I assumed if the OP wants to buy a mint one to use on his M4P, grinding down is not an option.
