Micro 4/3 & Micro PK Cameras & Sony NEX Micro 4/3 cameras from Panasonic and Olympus, the new Micro PK mount from Samsung, and the new Sony NEX cameras all offer the photo enthusiast an incredible array of adopted lenses which was not possible before these new digital formats. The MICRO 4/3 / PK forum is here at RFF because via adapters these cameras offer an inexpensive way to use rangefinder lenses on digital cameras -- in addition of just about every 35mm SLR lens you can think of. Not everyone wants to spend $7000 for a Leica M9, or even $1600 for a used Epson RD1 in order to use their Leica lenses on a digital body. Using Leica M or screw mount lenses on a relatively inexpensive digital body is a big deal. Who knows, in time we might see a rangefinders in these new mounts. Take note the Micro 4/3 format is NOT the same format as 4/3! Will other MICRO formats follow based upon established SLR mounts? HMMMM. Time will tell...

That settles it. Red G1 body. Brass adapter. Black or chrome lenses! Nobody would ever suspect that the thing could make photographs.

Red G1/brass Milich adapter looks pretty good to me.

I'm not sure that Bigfoot and Bubba would want to be seen in public with a little Blue or Red sibling.

A few test shots using the CV 75mm f/2.5 Color Heliar attached to the G1 with the Milich adapter. Tripod mounted and manual focusing using magnified focus assist.

A question for Scho .....

There has been much talk about the differences if any that the G1 vs. the M8 capture the "drawing" of a lens. I notice on you P-Base site that you have posted photos from both.

I have looked at them, and at this resolution, and on my screen, I can see little effective difference, clearly, my opinion is from a very limited set in less than ideal circumstances. Can you comment some more to this??

Thanks;

Dave

Dave, I think that lenses will usually retain their "drawing" character, contrast, and color rendition on both the M8 and G1. Differences in images taken with the same lens on each camera could be attributed more to in-camera raw data processing and profiling as well as inherent sensor differences (S/N, pixel density, cmos/CCD, etc.). Both cameras are capable of producing sharp, vibrant, and generally pleasing images with the same lenses. The process of image capture is of course quite different and some will feel more comfortable using an optical RF and others will prefer the EVF/LCD for focusing and image framing. I do a lot of landscape work and much prefer the G1 for the precise framing and accurate focusing. These attributes are particularly nice when shooting from a tripod using the LCD at waist level with magnified focus assist.

Regards,
Carl

I was waiting to get the G1 but ended up getting an MP. Go figure. (I already have an M8 but your guys' enthusiasm was contagious -- geez).

Another G1 vs M8 comparison. Both shot with the CV 75mm at f/2.5 (using the Milich adapter on the G1) and both tripod mounted. Both processed the same in LR 2.2 from raw files. The G1 image was scaled down in size to match that of the M8 image. The un-scaled, full size images from each are also posted on this site as is a scaled comparison where the M8 image was scaled up to match the G1 image size.

At least in the sub full sized photos I can not see too much difference in the image results. Which I suppose is to be expected given the use of RAW files (minimal in camera processing) and use of the same lens. I have begun to think about the possibility of buying a G1 specifically to use my M lenses. Well thats if the wife does nto find out!!

Haven't read much outside the forum about the G1. Is it a better camera than the M8? It certainly is less expensive.

I shoot weddings mostly with dslrs, but would like use some of my Leica lenses. The M8 is too expensive, but a very quite digital rangefinder type camera would be perfect during the actual service. The investment isn't very much if this would be useful, for example, at the alter during a service? Anyone doing this kind of thing with the camera?

I am thinking that Leica needs to get their heads out of their behinds right about now and start thinking about licensing themselves a little M4/3 and releasing a CL-D with an EVF by July, at a price of $1000. Otherwise who in the hell will spend six grand on an M8.2? Aside from the difference in color, those images are indistinguishable. All this from a company that makes boomboxes, electric razors, and microwave ovens!

i just received an adapter, on loan for a week or so, and when i attached my 21 zm lens it felt great! it's way more compact than the zi and feels quite solid as a combo. and i doubt that anyone would notice anything other than a point and shoot camera in my hand.
i cannot wait to find some daylight hours to shoot some.

May I ask how much is the Ltm adapter? I have a few ltm lens, more m39 since they are fsu lens (jupiter’s, industar). When I learn that the G1 woild have an Ltm adapter I began to think about getting one since I lack a digital camera!

John Milich sells the LTM to G1 adapter for $150. You can order from him via Paypal using his email address (jm@milich.com).

It's unforgivable Olympus did not design a eye level finder (and be it an electronique one) to their MFT alternative. I hate photographing off the rear LCD.
