Making us all look BAD!

It pissed me off watching tonight's news.
In Seattle's University District two young men with cameras stated they were with the UW's newspaper, and began asking women to pose top-less or nude. When that didn't work they cornered their victim in a back corner of a bookstore and sexually abused a woman.
Now everyone is on the look out for those "Damn criminals with cameras"

Time to be paranoid again.

violence against women and sexual assault is a huge deal everywhere...i used to work with university men to help stop sexual assaults and i truly believe it comes down to they way men are taught to think about women and the unequal power dynamics between the sexes. i'm not sure more violence is the answer, no matter how emotionally satisfying it might be. prison time might work though, where they might discover the magnitude of their crime first hand, not that i advocate eye for an eye punishments or anything

I'd be willing to bet when they are caught and sent to prison, they'll learn a whole lot more about sexual assault from the victim's point of view. Too bad they had to use cameras while being such jerks.

Or, more understanding of people who are uncomfortable when they see themselves photographed without giving permission first.

Real poetic justice would be their identification because somebody else noted their behavior and photographed them to give their photos to the police.

it really sucks. But it's always like that, apparently human society is condemned to suffering due to the few individual assholes. If you think about it, all the restrictive or forbidding rules and laws are made because once somebody made a stupid thing which should not be repeated. But people tend to generalize immediately and that's the biggest problem of course, not the laws but the "public oppinion".

A propos magnitude: Playing the bride daily for a 230 pound/7ft crack dealer and his buddies could have an healing effect indeed.
Getting older your standpoint changes, today i thinky about how I would feel if this had been my daughter, how could I stand it without getting mad ?

What egregious asses. I think--at the very least-- a prolonged public shaming and then a trial. Here in NY state that event would be prosecutable. And once someone is a convicted sex offender there are all kinds of attendant troubles whether they ever serve time or not.
For a start your identity and address become public record so all your neighbors can know just what kind of person is living next door.
Dumb and offensive crosses the line to criminal once again.

Hope they burn before going to hell... where they should burn forever.

BTW, I've been to that district in Seattle; it's kinda wild, even during the day, but also a nice bohemian area. It's a paradise for people-watching. And, indeed, for street shots.

Is this kind of assault known as "happy slapping?" Apparently here in the UK its the latest craze to hit the streets. A group of youths annoy, harass or just assault some unwitting and usually helpless person whilst photographing the event (usually using phone cameras) and sending the evidence to their pals.
Its obviously a reprehensible and illegal practice and should be taken very seriously. Unfortunately by refering to this kind of hooliganism by euphemisms such as "happy slapping" or "joy riding" it seems to reduce the seriousness of their behaviour. Criminal Assault, Sexual assault or Motor Vehicle Theft is what these swine are guilty of and should be treated very severly. Don't you agree?

Those kinds of guys make men look bad. They also make cameras look like tools of perversion. There is a post somewhere on here in which a guy says he once photographed a group of kids that said 'hey! it's a pervert' before posing for him. Photography and porn-like pictures are too closely associated in some people's minds. I get dirty looks from bystanders sometimes because of these happenings.

I live near the U-District and have seen stuff like that happening (though the girls were willing). That new series of videos with those girls posing topless and doing things - girls **** wild, well, that junk is really painting a bad picture of women, as well as men. It's evidence of serious moral degradation in our society.

Those guys (in the U-district) are molesters, and they are using cameras as tools of molestation. I hope they catch them, and prosecute them to the full extent of the law. And take their cameras away.

Exactly.
Can you imagine trying to walk in the U-District any time this week with a camera around your neck? If all you got were dirty looks, you'd be very lucky.

This Saturday I'll be at the local Kid's Fun Fair again, an open public event. It might be interesting. The booth I'm part of helps out though, (Human Rights and Cultural Diversity) and we provide kids with crafts to make.
