Philosophy of Photography Taking pics is one thing, but understanding why we take them, what they mean, what they are best used for, how they effect our reality -- all of these and more are important issues of the Philosophy of Photography. One of the best authors on the subject is Susan Sontag in her book "On Photography."

What's the Story...

behind the photos that may adorn your refrigerator...

I was just cleaning up in the kitchen and happened to look at some of the photos that we have posted on our refrigerator...knowing that we're not the only ones who do this, they're up there for a good reason so there must be a story behind these photos...

We have several photos on ours so I'll share on two or three of my favorite...
One is of my wife and daughter at our favorite, but now gone, Italian restaurant, they are sitting across the table from me but looking at each other...the lighting from the window is just right and their expressions are perfect...
Another is of our son, who was in sixth grade at the time (now a freshman in college) sleeping in his bed with a cast on his right arm...I happened to pass his room early in the morning and saw this scene...I never broke or fractured any bones so it was an odd thing for me to see...I thought I should record this moment...on one wall is a calendar (airplanes, he loves airplanes) and on his dresser you can see part of his fish tank...there are other things in the picture that tell who he is/was at that time...
Looking at that photo takes be back to that very day I shot it...
The last one I'll tell about is a B&W 4x5 Polaroid test shot of some flowers...I took two shots, slightly different exposures, kept the underexposed one and gave the better one to a friend...

So, what's on your frige??? And most importantly why???

A bunch of refrigerator magnets from a pizza place, my HMO, the vet, my insurance agent, a 2005 calendar and one from 2007, and a magnet printed with a picture of me sitting at my computer. On TOP of the fridge is an assortment of boxes of zip-lock bags, a cookie jar stuffed with Oreos, a box of trash bags, aluminum foil, plastic wrap, and most likely a film of greasy dirt.

Why? You had to ask? Because every available surface in this place is covered with SOMETHING! I don't have enough photo stuff or boxes of useless junk to cover everything so I have to make do with greasy dirt.

My step son's new house with his grandparents and my wife with him in front. Funny how things change. It's four years later, and he had to move because of job problems so the house is for sale. Also, his grandmother has now passed away. Just part of life - it was a good day when I took the photo.
