Philosophy of Photography Taking pics is one thing, but understanding why we take them, what they mean, what they are best used for, how they effect our reality -- all of these and more are important issues of the Philosophy of Photography. One of the best authors on the subject is Susan Sontag in her book "On Photography."

Cheap Trix #1

After I read the comments following my posting of low cost solution to a problem raised on Tom A's forum,
I thought of a couple of more cheapies that I use, andwondered if others had "Cheap Trix" to share.

Here's #1 as posted in Tom's in response for a "keeper" for slip on viewfinders:

May a country boy (?) suggest a low-tech solution? Get about six or eight inches of nylon monfilament (fishing line.)
Using an appropriate fishing knot, make a "lasso."

Put the lasso's loop around the base of the finder and pull it tight.
Now tie a snap swivel (yes, that's fishing item, too.)

Now, just snap the swivel onto your neckstrap split ring. Your viewfinder may come off, but you won't lose it.

This system also works well for eycups on SLRs. If you are not 'into' fishing - email me your address and I'll make you one.

CHEAP TRIX #2 - Pocket Unipod

Go to the pet department of the discount store.
Purchase a "small dog" nylon leash. (about $3)
Cut off the snap, but leave the swivel.

Now, put your left hand through the loop and grasp your RF in the usual way.

Step on the portion of the leash on the ground and exert some tension.

You can now hand-hold at 1/10... maybe slower. Sounds dumb but it works,

and it fits in your pocket.

CHEAP TRIX #3

Summertime in-car camera case (actually... anytime)

Purchase a soft-sided cooler (6 pack size for RF, 9 pack for SLRs) for +/- $5.

Keeps camera and film cool even in Chesapeake Summers (90+) plus

it does not scream "Steal me!". Light colors work best. (Mine has flowers on it.)

If you want to get fancy, Igloo has a new hunchbox shaped cooler for about $15

...and who would want your pbj sandwich anyway?

How about some ideas from others?

This is a good tip. I just use a length of heavy string with a loop tied in each end- one for my hand, one for my foot. It works.
