Optics and Lenses - This forum is aimed towards the TECHNICAL side of photographic OPTICS and LENSES. There will be some overlap by camera/manufacturer, but this forum is for the heavy duty tech discussions. This is NOT the place to discuss a specific lens or lens line, do that in the appropriate forum. This is the forum to discuss optics or lenses in general, to learn about the tech behind the lenses and images. IF you have a question about a specific lens, post it in the forum about that type of camera, NOT HERE.

What filter should I use for b/w photographs of whales? These are fin whales, humpbacks, and minkes in the North Atlantic: dark animals in dark water.

Thanks,

Grant

I will wait to see the great white whale. (There is a white humpback in the Pacific.) But here is what I was thinking. On a sunny day, the North Atlantic is blue and the whales are mostly dark gray, would a blue filter make the water lighter and the whales more distinct? Should I look for a polarizing filter to deal with glare off the water? This all assumes that I actually snap the picture quickly enough. I always get a bunch of whale footprints, slightly disturbed water where the whale once was.

Thanks,

Grant
