No New M9 but M8-2 - Leica Announcement
I dont know the reliability of the source but see:
Quote:
LEICA ANNOUNCEMENTNO NEW M9 LEICA M8 UPGRADE
Leica have just announced that there will not be an M9 as previously thought.
Instead they will offer an Upgrade on all existing M8 cameras with the following modifications.
1. New Saphire Viewing Screen (Virtually
unscratchable)
2. Shutter to 1/4000th
3. Quieter actuation of Shutter mechanism
4. New Firmware
5. 2 Year Warranty with Upgrade
This modification will be available from March 2008 and will be booked through Leica Germany's Website at a cost to the owner of 1200 Euros.
Leica see the M8 as being an ongoing camera that can be modified throughout its lifetime.
Further News will be posted as and when we receive it

Shutter to 1/4000 of a sec? Down from 1/8000 of a sec?
New firmware?
Where did you get that from? Who's the nut who put that together?

David Stevens is a very well-known and respected Leica dealer in the UK.
I'd follow the link before shooting from the lip.

I wouldn't know it by "navigating" the website, not living in the UK, and the oddball items in that list.
I did follow the link, and the whole thing seems questionable, to say the least.
Of course, it's impossible that webpages get hacked as a matter of course. We should always take written statements on the Internet at face value, lest we shoot from the lip. Or the fingertips.

Also, if this is a "Leica announcement", why haven't they "announced" it on their own Website(s)?

I would ignore everything until it's on a Leica web site or press release.

That's fine. You are entitled to your opinion. Let's just wait and see, eh?
In the meantime, referring to David Stevens as a "nut" because you don't read what you want to read is, I think, a tad petulant.

Bill

I think, instead of putting a saphire viewing screen, they should replace the VF with the the Zeiss Ikon one, and reimburse 1200 euros to all existing owners :-)

Speaking of teaching other people how to read: I didn't say "David Stevens is a nut". I said whoever put that list together is a nut. Meaning (translation for your benefit): perhaps the owner of that site got that from questionable sources.
But you go right ahead and get personally offended.
Regards,
Gabriel

So it's not an announcement yet. It's a leaked rumour. And unreliable at that until it's official.
Now we're getting somewhere.
Regards,
Me again.

A saphirre rear display? How about a $0.99 cent plastic stick on cover.
Maybe they are putting in new shutters? The new sensor isn't ready, so they are going to try to sell the shutters as mods?

Why does this camera bring out such ugliness in people?

Tell you what, Gabriel, instead of getting all hissy about it, why don't you just relax and wait for the official announcement? And I refer you to your first post on the subject:

New firmware?

Your words seem pretty clear to me, nice and short too, no problem here in reading them...
Oh, and I am not personally offended, just amused by your knee-jerk reaction.

I'm interested in the concept of Leica treating the M8 as a camera that can be modified through its lifetime. Instead of buying absolute reliability, you're buying into a support system that will keep your camera alive and current forever (for a fee). A bit like Dyson vacuum cleaners.

I'll run "a tad petulant" by my dictionary.
And I'll check if "nut" has some strange extra strength on different regions. Like "rubber".
Lookings,
Gabriel

He didn't refer to Mr. Stevens as a nut, he asked who the nut was who put out the info.
If you really want other posters to "relax," then I'd say that using terms like "hissy, knee-jerk" and "petulant" isn't the way to do it.

An excellent point.
In fact, a bit like Leitz... My IID is actually a 1930 Model I that was factory upgraded 4 years later. In this day and age, when so much acreage is being devoted to writing about recycling, this is a step in the right direction. Those who have paid £'000's for their M8 should be pleased to learn that it can not only be updated, but given a new 2 year warranty.
Regards,
Bill

"I take photos. No, I don't "do" something. Some only do film, some only do B&W, some only do HDR, some only do nudes, some only do children, some only do flowers and lots do lingerie. I take photos, not run a specialized cable channel."
WTF?? Even on the defensive in your own profile! Very revealing! I read a lot of the posts on this forum and time and again I see your attitude "shining" through! This should surely be a place for intelligent discussion betwwen adults. This nonsense all gets very boring.

It does sound like an interesting concept, albeit an expensive one. Maybe Leica will come out with an A La Carte M8 system some day where you decide what your M8 will look like and which features it has. Sounds cool. And wallet crunching.
