Some spill over from the Kievs, the Soviet copy of the Contax II/III can also be expected. Question G2 Flash problems

Hello guys,

I don't know if you remember, but few weeks ago I bothered you with my doubts regarding the choise between the Contax G and the medium format.
Even if almost everybody suggested me to choose the MF (and, more in particular, the Bronica RF) in the end I bought a G2.

To say the truth I was looking for a Bronica, but during my research (in Italy Bronica RF is quite rare), I found an occasion I could not refuse: G2 + Planar + Biogon 28 + TLA 200 for the incredible price of 500 Euro!!! God bless digital!!!!!

Well, I have just received the item from a french ebay user and I was testing it.

I have this problem: the flash does not fire.

I'll try to explain the problem more in detail:

- by pressing the TEST button the flash operates normally.

- when I mount the TLA on the camera, the mark in the viewfinder turns on and the shutter speed is set at 1/60. So this means the camera "sees" the flash (I don't know if you are understanding my terrible English... ).

- nevertheless if I take a picture the flash doesn't fire.

As I have just received the camera, maybe I am doing something wrong (I DO hope I am doing something wrong).

If you have understood my poor English, have you any suggestions?

Please help!!!

p.s.
By the way, the G2 despite of its noisy autofocus, is really a joy camera.

I have a G2, wonderful camera. Frankly vs. a Bronica 6455 RF I think you did better. If you're going to go MF then go whole hog and 6x6 minimum, IMO.

Anyway, in terms of the flash it should work. Do you have another flash to try on the camera? The G2 will work with most any but the older high-voltage flashes (do not take a chance with those). If another flash works then you know it's the TLA200 and not the camera.

Oh, and get a 45 Planar as soon as you can. AWESOME lens.

The planar is already stuck on the camera...

Thanks for the advice, I'll try with a stupid Woctron, an universal flash. It should be suitable as it is a modern flash.

Let's see...

I found the problem.

I tried the Woctron mounted to the camera and it didn't fire.

Then I connected the flash to the camera with a syncro chord and... it finally fired...

Bad news, there's something wrong with the hot shoe socket. I would have prefered the problem was on the TLA, I could buy another one with few money. Now I have to let the camera be serviced for I don't know how much money.

Ahhhrrrrgggg.

Very bad feedback coming for that french guy!

sorry for your flash problem, the G2 is a fantastic camera when working;
I have one and I also have a flash for it - but I never used it, so I do not know if it will work (and I will not try it ;-))

Just to aid and comfort: according to many G2 users, TLA 200 is too close to lens axis - when mounted directly on G2 hot shoe - to give satisfactory results. Definitely better when cable detached, and even better if softening the bulb light with some white fabric or paper. Otherwise - upon repair - put a TLA20 on hot shoe.

In the G1 the connections to the hot shoe are made by springs. Bet it is the same in the G2... shouldn't be a bad repair.

I just hope it's not loose and floating around in there.
