Optics Theory - This forum is aimed towards the TECHNICAL side of photographic OPTICS THEORY. There will be some overlap by camera/manufacturer, but this forum is for the heavy duty tech discussions. This is NOT the place to discuss a specific lens or lens line, do that in the appropriate forum. This is the forum to discuss optics or lenses in general, to learn about the tech behind the lenses and images. IF you have a question about a specific lens, post it in the forum about that type of camera, NOT HERE.

yep, I think so, because of the pronounced outer rings

is fun though: ( here I must have put the slider for contrast and clarity far to the right )

this one I'd consider as smooth, beautiful bokeh ( taken with the same lens! )

Look at the crazy prices people pay for Meyer Trioplan lenses to get the same look... some people really want that look.

Does not bother me either way :-)
I just brought up the little I know about this bokeh thing.

It's a lens that has a great following and for different reasons.
I like the glow and painterly color rendering.
It's has many "features" all in one lens and of course can be stopped down a bit for a different look.
I kick myself as around 2008 I had 5 copies that I bought in an eBay lot as it was about the same price as buying one.
I sold 3 for $75ea shipped and gave one to a friend on another forum.
Fortunately I have one left.

On cropped sensor f2.8

thank you very much for the pointer MIkhail! impressive photos! ( the link: http://pro.magnumphotos.com/C.aspx?V...ID=2K7O3RQFMW7 )
quite a number with similar bokeh effects, usually numerous reflections of setting sun on water. most are taken against the sun. ( in the photo above it's electrical light bulbs )

there are two threads, one called "countre jour", the other "the beauty of lens flare". They overlap, also with this thread, possibly a few similar photos there. or this one?

Personally I find the exaggerated bokeh effects such as the bright conspicuous circles, sometimes with rings around them, to be distracting and even annoying. They draw attention from the subject.

In my not so humble opinions, the best bokeh shots are where the out of focus areas support the subject and add to the context but are pleasingly subordinated. These are two kind of random ones which I think try to show what I'm talking about.

Canon GIII 40mm probably f2-2.8 Kodachrome 64

Olympus Stylus zoom. Autoexposure, probably close to wide open.

DMR, I'm with you there. Wild, moire effect out of focus areas are not the definition of Good Bokeh. Voigtlander 50/1.5 Nokton, old school.
