Anyone has tried the new Epson V500?

Hello to all,

I am looking for a scanner. Being on a budget I'll get a flatbed first, and maybe a dedicated film scanner for Xmas The thing is I need to scan MF too but that's another story.

Epson has a new flatbed in stores, it's called the V500 and on paper it looks very nice for $300. I am wandering if someone here on RFF has had a chance to try it? If so thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Best,

Philippe.

Save your money and get a V700 or V750. Christmas is not that far away and you already have $300 toward the purchase.

I haven't tried one (I've just got a V700), but the 500's DMax of 3.4 sounds a bit low...

"6400 dpi optical resolution and 3.4 optical density"
http://www.photographyblog.com/index...photo_scanner/

Compared to the V700 it's also more limited in only being able to scan 4 mounted transparencies or 12 negs at a time (the V700 can do 12 trannies or 24 negs at a time).

no opinion here, but I wanted to say that the v700 can be had (refurbished) from Epson at $415 which is now about $400CAD!

I would go for a 4490 for $99 shipped for a refurbished unit from the Epson Store. The V500 doesn't seem to offer any real world (vs. marketing spin) image benefits. The 6400 is more hype than anything. The new light source may warm up faster but it doesn't give any better dmax ability (both are 3.4). I think the V500 is just a repackaged 4490 with a few marketing tweaks.

My $.02,
Doug

Wow so many replies in so little time. Thanks a lot folks!

I would buy a refurbished V700 anytime at $400 but unfortunately Epson USA will not deliver to Canada and Epson Canada has no V700 refurb in stock.

Doug that idea is interesting. I should perhaps look for a 4490 (or 4990) and save?
