| Digital Leica M8 / M8.2 / M9 / M-E /Mono / M10 aka "M" Discussions about the Leica M8 /M 8.2 / M9 / M9-P/ M-E / M Monochrom / M10 aka "M": Leica digital M mount rangefinder cameras. Naming the new digital M the "Leica M" is VERY unfortunate as it will only confuse newbies with other Leica M cameras of the the past. Happily there is room for confusion with only the past 59 years of Leica M production ... since Leica introduced the Leica M system in 1953. Using IR
I tried to use IR to create a sense of looking back in history here:
Geervliet, a small hamlet in Holland, has one of the small Jewish cemeteries in our country. After serving the small community there for centuries it was closed in 1940. But it is still kept neat and the stones are clean.
To try and record my feelings I used IR photography. Summaron 3.5 cm 3.5, B&W 092 filter. Raw conversion using M8Hisat profile in C1LE, Whitebalance on the tombstones. No further processing.
PS. Sorry, I posted this in LUF as well

About 1/20th to 1/45. f 4.0 to 5.6. ISO 160. I used AE. It was at about 7 in the evening, so soft evening light.

Probably because these are very simple double-gauss designs. My Summicron 35 asph is virtually unusable for Ir. My Summarit is excellent for UV photography, another exotic field in which the M8 turns out to be brilliant. I'll post some UV shots later.

What filter size
Jaapv: what filter size does your Summaron take? This is the 3.5 with the goggles, right? I have one that I haven't used in years (it was my first Leica lens). Your results are just fabulous. Interestingly, I find that I am using glass on the M8 that has been sitting on the shelf for a while. I'd gotten out of the habit of using my Noctilux, but have six or seven real keepers from the last week or ten days. And I was going to sell my Summarit , too. . . maybe I have to reconsider.
Oh, one more question: what version firmware?
Ben

Goggled. 39 mm, 1.102 firmware. Don't sell the Summarit, it is great for dreamy indoor shots...

Has anyone ever compiled a list of the best lenses to use for IR? I would be very interested in this. I thought my early 70s Summicron 50 would be good but the results with Kodak HIE were a little dissapointing.

Very cool photos. Glad to see examples of communities that still honor and remember their own.
For what it's worth about IR filter selection: my local Leica rep also reps B+W filters. He recommends either the 092 or 093 filters. ('Course he'd be happy if I ordered both.) So, if you can find one, the B+W 093 might be fun to try also. I have yet to try either.
Just a thought...

This was shot with the 35mm 2.0 ASPH and B+W 093.

The same as mine, a bit soft. Sorry, unusable was putting it too strongly. I should have written: The Summaron appears to outperform the Summicron in this respect.

The community has disappeared. There are just a few scattered survivors. I am trying to find out who does the upkeep.

Has anyone just used a deep red filter? How does that work? I don't have any true infrared filters...

Basically 092 is deep red. It still transmits some visible light, reduction factor 30x
