First Pics from MG-1

I finally got my pics back from my MG-1, on which I had to do some surgery, replacing the POD. Actually it was only about a 1/2 hour job. I'm not happy with the colors, but that doesn't concern me, that's a developing problem. All in all, the pics seems to have come out OK. I'm next going to shoot some B&W pics to see how it performs with longer exposures. Previously, the shutter stayed open as if it were on the "B" setting. Now, it opens and closes as it's supposed to indoors. Harlee

The MG-1 seems like an intresting model, exposure wise the pics look decent given the harsh noonish looking direct sun light.

I recently picked up a second MG-1, a black one with case, for a minimal amount of moola. I replaced the door gaskets, cleaned up the viewfinder, replaced the POD, and in general cleaned and polished up the outside of the camera, and it turned out to be quite a nice little toy. I'm shooting my first roll with it and hope to post some of the pics as soon as I finish up the roll and get it developed. My feelings are that the black models MG-1 are not quite as robust as the chrome versions, or the GSN, GTN Yashicas. For instance, the film advance is made of plastic rather than metal. I do like the meter sensor behind the lens filter however. But we'll see what the results bring.

I have several Yashicas - CC, GT, GTN and MG-1. Somehow I have allways regarded the CC as the "best" one, then the GT/GTN as "great" and then MG-1 as a more "simple" camera....maybe it is the apperance or something in the design. when shooting similar objects and testing the cameras I have found all the models giving the same high quality output. So even if i "like" my CC best I get the same results from all of them under normal situations and the MG-1 is probably better than it´s reputation!!

Well, I received some pics back taken on my most recently acquired black
MG-1. This is the one on which I had to do some cleaning, replacing door seals, replacing the POD, cleaning the viewfinder, and general overall cleaning on the outside of the body. This is really a labor of love however. I'm pleased with the results, and may hang on to it for a while before I put her up for sale. I'm heading into Denver in about 6 weeks and may tote this one along with me. Harlee

Nice pictures. The MG is great. It is the little sister of the Electro GX with the f1.7 6 element lens. Also check out the Yashica Electro MC. Very small camera and pretty much same features as the MG 1, but scale focus.

Tip: Yashicas like lens hoods.

RE: Lens hood for Yashicas. I always put a 1-A filter and a lens hood on all of my cameras. A couple of years back, I picked up a "parts" GS in a Yashica briefcase-like carrying case with some extra goodies in it. One such goody was a brand new metal Yashica slip-on lens hood with the Yashica name on it and a thumb screw to hold it on. Really looks great and doesn't obscure the viewfinder. I switch it between my GTN and my black MG-1. It looks great on both cameras. I'll post a picture of it mounted as soon as I get a digital of the camera.

This lens hood came with a parts Yashica camera I picked up on Ebay. It works realy great on all of my Yashicas, 2 GSNs, 1 GTN, 2 MG-1s. I've been shooting the Electro 35s since 1970 while living in Sasebo, Japan, as well as a few other Yashicas thrown in, but this is the first slip on hood like this that I've seen. This one is like new!

I would be interested in what the lens hood depth is. I have a 55m slip on hood for a old Kiron lens but it looks to be deeper. I am wondering if it will vignette. I haven't got film back from it yet.

Well, yes I would say that I'd recommend the MG-1. After shooting some shots with it, I've learned to appreciate it a little more than I did previously. I shot some B&W with it, using a Y2 filter and they came out quite nice. I thought I had a deep red filter to try but I can't for the life of me find it. I wanted to see how it would meter through the filter, and it did just fine. I now have two nice MG-1s in my arsenal which includes a GTN, GSN, silver MG-1, and a black MG-1. All of them excellent performers. While the MG-1s don't have a shutter speed to match the GSN/GTNs for available light shots [3 sec. vs. 30 sec.], I've shot some almost night shots with the MG-1 [around 8:30 PM] and the exposures came out just fine. I would have no hesitation in using the MG-1 indoors with 400 film.
