Using Rolleinar 2 on Rollei 3.5F

It's my understanding that using a rolleinar 2 gives you focusing from 20 inches down to 12.4 inches. Can you use the screen to actually focus at these distances or does one have to "rock" the camera front to back till the subject is in focus? Also, do you have to switch from viewing to taking lens or are there two rolleinars as one unit? TIA.

I have just started used Rolleinars on my 2.8F. I suspect the principle is the same for the lot of them. You can actually focus using the focusing knob. The entire focusing action of the knob gives you the range within which the Rolleinar will focus (a nice webpage giving the ranges of all three Rolleinars can be found here: http://www.wheeldon.plus.com/images/r13_copy.jpg). No need to rock the camera back and forth in order to focus, unless you choose to do so.

The Rolleinars consist of two lenses, one which mounts on the viewing lens and another to be mounted on the taking lens. In photos of the actual Rolleinar they sometimes seem to be one lens unit because they two lenses can lock together (by mounting one onto the other) for portability. But they are two.

Just connect the bigger lens to the finder lens, the red point has to be on top.
the smaller lens is attached to the lens at the bottom. parallax is corrected automatically.

Thanks everyone.

Thanks everyone.

That is great info, thanks. Is it possible to attach the lens hood directly to the Rolleinar? TIA.

Hi,

we had some discussion about Rolleinars and how to use them in http://rangefinderforum.com/forums/s...ad.php?t=71608

This should answer most questions raised.

Concerning the lens hoods, if you have one, which mounts to the out bayonet it just fits over the taking lens Rolleinar as it does over any other filter. It is a bit fiddly to fit, procedure is:
  1. Fit taking lens Rolleinar
  2. Fit lens hood
  3. Fit finder lens attachments (Rolleinar+Rolleiparkeil or single combined piece)
If you buy used, make sure you get a complete set (either three piece or two piece). Sometimes on ebay you see incomplete sets (e.g. one Rolleinar and one Rolleiparkeil) or just a single Rolleinar.

Depending on far you can stop down (light levels), at least a complete Rolleinar 1 set (1m to 0.5m or 40in to 20in) can be used hand held.

Hope this helps.

1 caveat, again from memory, IIRC when using the Rolleinar 3 on a 2.8F, the viewing Rolleinar is so large it prevents you from attaching a lens hood to the taking Rolleinar. No such problem w/the Rolleinar 3 on the 3.5F.

Ok, you might have got me here. I am having a Rolleicord V which takes the smaller Bay I accessories (hoods, filters, closeup lenses, ...).

Actually, you were right & I was wrong, so I stand corrected. I must have been following the wrong sequence & attaching the focusing Rolleinar 1st, when I should have been attaching it last. Tried the correct sequence you described w/my 2.8F & Rolleinar 3 @ home & was able to use it w/the hood.

A hint: the depth of field is radically reduced when using the Rolleinars. This is true for any macro photography. Many, many Rolleinar shots of mine were wrecked by [my lack of knowledge] super-shallow depth of field. Then I began stopping way down: f/16 and f/22. This means faster film or tripod. TMAX-2 at EI 800 is perfect.
