Photography by Correspondance?

Any suggestions or direction to look for correspondance course in photography - no darkroom stuff but more 'basic' I think.

Any good book will do, I reckon. The basics are easily taught, and there are plenty of websites that do so. It's when you want to do develop your own style that a course will start to become handy IMO, but then you want to have a teacher standing next to you.

If there's a public library nearby, check out the photography and photojournalism sections. Studying the best photography of the past 170 years is one of the best ways to learn the craft.

I highly recommend the NY Institute of Photography's correspondence course. I'm currently taking the course and enjoying it immensely.

I completed the NY Institute of Photography's correspondence course about 4 years ago. I can recommend it for the great personal mentoring and instruction. I finished right before the digital course came out - darkroom was optional.

Maybe you could get the same instruction from a few books but you'd probably spend more and not have the feedback. The assignments are challenging - you'll get out of it what you put into it. My advisor was both encouraging and honest - he was pretty blunt when I submitted crap and challenged me to do better and resubmit for another review.

Your mileage (and motivation) may vary, but it helped me get into assignment work and producing art prints after having stopped being an active photographer in college.

UK magazine Amateur Photographer do two courses, Diploma in Photography and Introduction to Digital Imaging. I have just done the Diploma course - it's quite good and has an active online forum which goes some way to making up for the lack of student content.
